Some of them are, yes. All are art professionals.

I find it deeply weird to see so many friends and colleagues travel to the US as if everything were normal.

If only there were a profession who had the mandate to report on the actions of elected officials and hold them to account when they break the law or violate ethical norms.

The only radio I listen to is college radio. That has been the case since I was 14, with exceptions for the opera show on cbc.

Imagine listening to the radio to hear music you don’t like, just so you can tell yourself your tastes aren’t siloed. Is that something real people actually do? Because it sounds positively masochistic to me.

On and I’m *doused* in Halston like it’s 1977. It’s also cozy and though it’s not listed in the scent pyramids, I get a blast of fresh picked apples from it.

It’s the first real fall day here and I have my Irish fisherman’s sweater, some sweatpants, a mug of herbal tea, and a Stephen King book I picked up for 3$ on a whim at the thrift. I’m so cozy that for now, everything is fine.

I could have never guessed how important sweaters, and having a wide assortment or them, would be to my life before moving to Edmonton.

I might be naive but I think I sidestep a lot of that as a sessional lecturer in studio arts. It’s normal and expected that I show up to work in jeans, steel toed boots, and a paint spattered work shirt.

Apparently it’s disqualifying to show up to a (corporate) job interview with an iced coffee. Which make me glad my entire life has been arrive industry/freelance design/arts/art academia because while I might only drink an iced coffee every 3 years, that level of uptight would make me lose my mind.

Chloë Lum @compulsiveobserver.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
The iced coffee discourse makes me glad to have never worked a corporate job in my life because wtf. These unwritten rules sound completely irrational and bizarre to me.

This is not just cursed, its monstrous. The digital resurrection of a historian who died in January of this year, all so Grammarly can get some more clicks and engagement from students and/or scholars and/or others. It feels so wrong on so many levels, these ghosts enslaved to AI forever

I don't know where to start with this but... Grammerly is now offering "expert review" of your work by living and dead academics. Yes, dead ones - without anyone's explicit permission it's creating little LLMs based on their scraped work and using their names and reputations. Obscene.
It may be possible to opt out of having YOUR work used to train genAI - https://lnkd.in/eXZB6TY8'
The post includes a screenshot of an option for "Expert Review" in Grammarly from "Selected Experts, David Abulafia, Historian specialising in Mediterranean and global medieval history, author of the Great Sea

Having to use an eye brow brush with Murphy’s oil soap to get the dust out of the detailing makes me wonder what the hell I was thinking to buy an art deco vanity. I live on a boulevard in the prairies, there is *so* much dust.

Chloë Lum @compulsiveobserver.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
More ornate styles, like art deco, are harder to clean. I have a piece I love, but the dust is *so* hard to clean from the curlicues.

I was seated next to a engineer specializing in water infrastructure and usage this evening and all I could think to ask was if he had read Imperial by William Volmann. He hadn’t. Now I want to read Volmann but can’t remember if I sold all my books of his last downsize or if they are still packed.

These caterers need to be marched down to a veg friendly Viet place and have a satay tofu bahn mí with extra jalepenos and a good generous squeeze of peanut sauce just to learn that people who don’t eat meat do in fact like flavour.
110
Chloë Lum @compulsiveobserver.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Oh my god. Like what the fuck. They would never prepare meat that way, why on earth would tvp be tasty that way? In my touring musician days, a venue in Paris served us vegans roasted potatoes covered in canned maraschino cherries. It *had* to have been passive aggressive.
110
Chloë Lum @compulsiveobserver.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Very likely. The non vegan sandwiches were on baguette, which is pretty much always vegan. The vegan sandwiches were served on old pumic stones and had no condiments or seasonings at all.

I was just served a sandwich that was probably made out of sand. That’s how dry and crumbly it was. I had no idea bread could be a desiccant.

I don’t think any caterer in the history of catering companies has *ever* eaten their own vegan options.
