They don’t think that causing people hardship is bad necessarily. They would weigh it against the amount of friction they’ve removed for a much larger population or some such bs. It’s all numbers games in pursuit of convincing themselves they make the best decisions always. They don’t care about us.

How many years of worth of tax increase will they spend on trying to stop the tax increase? Probably way more than they’ll even live for.

You can laugh & think people deserve it, just don't do it in my replies. I'm sharing this not bc I think it's a danger for myself or most of my mutuals, but Meta is really pushing Muse when you use any of their apps. Maybe your parent, or kid, or other person close to you might decide to try it.

Mitch is going to need extra support for this one because this forum will not include any of the other progressive candidates like myself. They chose to only include the incumbents and Eli Arnold on purpose so it won’t be a very friendly crowd. Turn up and turn out!!

Hearing Mayor Wilson go on TV and say (paraphrased) that Portland should not be innovative or try new things is about the least leader-like thing I could imagine a Mayor saying about their city. Come on, man.

You’d think that bringing back up the horrifically unpopular PPB response to the 2020 racial justice protests would not be in the interest of pro police orgs. But then, they don’t understand us.

Journalism lives! The Mercury included a history of the police’s actions in 2020, adding necessary context to the frankly popular anti-police sentiment that arose and still reverberates. I shouldn’t feel relieved to see a paper not just parroting conservative talking points, but it’s uncommon now.
The point that many of Green's detractors have missed, in their rush to shame the councilor, is that Portland police have a storied history of racialized and politicized violence. Coordinated attacks against those who criticize the institution must be called out for their anti-democratic nature-
particularly during such a heated election season."When we talk about accountability... oftentimes, people are looking for a form of punishment," Day said. "I believe accountability and culture change occurs around corrective action, and that discipline is intended to change behavior. We're not into punishing people. We're into changing behavior."
If that's true, then Councilor Green deserves the same courtesy Day has extended to the Bureau since taking office.

I love that intelligence index on a linear scale vs the cost on a log scale. Most people will not realize that this makes things look a lot better than they actually are. And the line is still bending really hard towards cost. Plot it on a linear/linear scale cowards!

A very obvious and provable fact. Why do humans prefer cruelty in situations that make us uncomfortable? Maybe helping makes us feel like we’re saying being uncomfortable is ok, and we don’t like that? Anyway, let’s choose kindness and it’ll be better for everyone. Oh, and a lot cheaper too.

It’s at least criminal negligence. They could, you know, monitor the AIs and shit them down when they see signs of bad behavior. And better yet, stop them from accessing the internet at all. The whole rogue framing is only because they don’t want to put in real controls.

I was just talking yesterday about how the police delay any form of accountability (if it ever comes) so long that not many of us remember the incident by the time they admit fault. I can talk to both sides in a way that people can hear, which is not necessarily possible directly. We need the big tent cause fascism.

All of this was a result of the performance system not being tied to actual results. The pivots were so frequent and dependencies so often lagging, it didn’t matter if we were going to succeed. Only that we appeared to be on the way to achieving great things. I broke that illusion and was punished.

Despite it being obvious we couldn’t execute, with spreadsheet planning in the red for most of each project individually, he said go. When I pushed him, he replied “we could do it if we had more resources”. I asked if that was the plan and he said no. And then told me to embrace ambiguity.🤦

My last boss at meta asked me to put together schedules for two possible projects so we could choose between them. For whatever reason, he then stacked them on top of each other and called that the plan. I pointed out that these were overly aggressive as single projects and they shared resources.

I did not last more than a few years in any role that required me to say things were working when I knew they weren’t. Or that we could execute a clearly completely impossible schedule because “we’ve done it before, so it’ll go better this time” while making exactly zero improvements to the process.

Great thread. The amount of forced of AI sycophancy in the tech industry is astounding. The covering up of issues and over the top touting of minor successes is (further) distorting the world of tech business. Even before AI, the incentives were to lie about success to make the boss look good.

Also the modern performance systems all reward pleasing the boss a lot more than being a good worker. So bosses want to please their boss more than set up systems that work well. Sycophants all the way down, so the execs don’t have an avenue to understand what actually happens on the ground.

Thrive in solidarity @communalpdx.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
The executive mind cannot comprehend that, if you show down and put the right pieces in place, the end date will come A LOT sooner. The start date is always the only thing that matters because it comes sooner on the imaginary aspiration board. Then you eat tech debt for the whole project: slowest.

I’m constantly stunned at how we are told to go faster than is possible. Only extremely aggressive, assume everything goes right schedules are allowed. When I ask if any schedule has ever gone without issue, I am told no, there are always problems. Then I ask for slack and they say no.

To be fair, the point I’m making is that there is no way to measure generalists with the current system. And that applies to basically all soft skills, like the ones in this post. It’s sad because those skills are often the ones that make someone successful or not.

Thrive in solidarity @communalpdx.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
As a tech worker, employers want to see deep specialization as you gain experience. Generalists, who in my (not so humble) opinion hold together most projects, are not valued much due to lack of imagination of hiring committees. We don’t fit in a box like they want to see to feel confident hiring.
