Failure demand: a great term for how governments pay to fix things that we keep breaking. Specifically, things that we needn't break. But hey, fixing things that we break counts towards GDP, so ... maybe we also need a better way to count economic activity! thepoint.com.au/opinions/260...

There are relatively simple, practical things that you can do for your own wellbeing. Being kind to others is one of them! 🧡 Six things psychologists are talking about - #6. #Care in action. #AnEthicsOfCare time.com/article/2026...
6. Doing Random Acts of Kindness Is Good for You
Being kind isn't just good for others—it's good for you. TIME highlights a review of 24 studies showing that random acts of kindness boost the giver's well-being, and the benefits hold whether you help a close friend or a total stranger. The payoff is easy to earn: try one act a day for a week—greeting a barista by name, writing a colleague a handwritten thank-you—and experts say you may get "hooked," which can lead to growing more empathetic overall.

Heartbreaking analysis for the millions of Australians who protested the government's plan to send us into that war. They knew this would happen. From a recent article by Audrey Kurth Cronin on how al-Qaeda ended. www.foreignaffairs.com/united-state... #AusPol
Quotation from article: The invasion of Iraq did more to prolong the life of al-Qaeda than any other single event, drawing fresh recruits from Sunni populations all over the world, and eventually creating the conditions for the emergence of the Islamic State organization.

Paul Keating had his strengths and weaknesses — as we all do — but there is something tragic that these words of his from 30 years ago still apply perfectly today.
A Keating quotation: The great tragedy of the shamelessly regressive politics of Pauline Hanson is not so much that it's rooted in ignorance and prejudice and fear, though it is; not so much that it projects the ugly face of racism, though it does; not so much that it's dangerously divisive and deeply hurtful to many of her fellow Australians, though it is; not even that it will cripple our efforts to enmesh ourselves in a region wherein lie the jobs and prosperity of future generations of young Australians, though it will — the great tragedy is it perpetuates a myth, a fantasy, a lie.

The myth of the monoculture. The lie that we can retreat to it.

AI does groupthink even worse than people! So, better to just use one AI to solve a problem. The groupthink solution? Diverse AIs "raised in different places with different values and purposes." Monoculture doesn't work for AI either. #CaringDemocracy www.exponentialview.co/p/why-one-ai...
Quote from article: I see two problems at work here. First, LLMs lack diversity (they are low-variance): set 30 agents the same coding task and 18 of them will name their git branch identically. Second, agents lack the institutions that make human groups robust: reputation, recourse and protection for the lone dissenter. These aren’t necessarily unfixable, but it’s not yet clear what the fix is. On the diversity side, I particularly like the solutions Thinking Machines puts forward: an ecosystem of AIs raised in different places, with different values and purposes, “keeping the weirdness alive.” After all, most good ideas started weird.

Not really providing connection. Not providing real connection? Chatbots are like social junk food according to the research of Psychology of Technology Dissertation Award Winner Dunigan Folk.
At a time when AI companions are widely promoted as a remedy for loneliness, Folk suggests chatbots may function more like social junk food, providing short-term satiation at the cost of long-term fulfillment. Drawing on experimental, longitudinal, and cross-cultural methods, Folk investigates when, why, and for whom AI companions fall short of human connection. He shows that chatbots disappoint when they perform prototypically human behaviors, that their appeal depends on individual and cultural tendencies to anthropomorphize technology, and that, over the course of a year, chatbot use and loneliness reinforce one another. Folk’s work offers guidance for how we design, deploy, and think about AI companionship in an era of growing social disconnection.

History isn’t a competition. Caring for each other’s history is an important practice, especially when those histories apply to the same space and place, and sometimes, even the same time. From ‘Our Common Nature’ podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/c... #AusPol #CaringDemocracy #Connection
Each history is part of the truth, and it's not like your truth is better than mine. It's like we have to live with each other's truths, and if we put them side by side together, we will find truth, and we can do that in music. Because that's what we do in music.

A screen shot of one of the Six Things Psychologists are talking about this week. It says:

	3. Friendships are as Important for Your Health as Romantic Relationships, Experts Say
High-quality friendships are essential for both mental and physical well-being. Research highlighted by The Washington Post shows that strong social connections can reduce the risk of depression and even make physical obstacles, like a steep climb, feel less exhausting. Yet society often fails to value these relationships as highly as romantic ones, notes social psychologist Bella DePaulo, PhD. Experts recommend nurturing friendships by being accessible during both good and bad times and practicing the reciprocity needed to build lasting trust.
