Got to the part in Townfall where Terry O'Quinn does a Silent Hill Die Hard, just running around annihilating bitches with a shotgun. An unexpectedly delightful change of pace

Walking home at night through the fog after spending the evening playing Silent Hill with Sam. Good thing I have no traumas or mental conditions. The monsters are all just giving me high fives

finally getting around to playing Shadow of the Erdtree. pretty good so far. it is insane that you have to beat one of the hardest optional bosses in the main game to access it. wild confidence in the market

I don't know a specific word for when it's a single story/event, but a specific focus on a narrow area like that is generally called a "pet doctrine".

ah, good, they've made firefox look different. that's what i wanted. and rather than match my computer's non-distracting, low-key dark grey colour theme, they've successfully guessed that i want this one app to be *intensely* purple.

the original idea was for her to be a toxic mage but the rules for toxic mages in SR5 are "you get access to two really shit spells and you have to be evil and stupid and live in a toxic waste dump". so now she's a sort of metagenic lizard/poison-dart-frog girl. which is better.

how did she get that way, you ask? it's simple. it was an accident. the simple accident of a well-meaning maniac.

introduced my new shadowrun character Nox tonight. she is a very professional, skilled combat specialist and asset to the team. also if she misses one of her daily injections she starts sweating and exhaling extremely lethal poisons that paralyze and kill anyone nearby. on top of that, she's French

Saw the new Resident Evil. Great fun. My favourite bit is where the guy checked the hospital map, plotted a route through the maternity ward, and the entire cinema made an "oh, no" noise in unison

It's really refreshing seeing shitey normal working class life depicted like this in a game, and a Silent Hill game no less. Pebble-dashed council flats, three-bar fires, Post Office counters, concrete shopping precincts. This must be how posh people felt playing Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.
The inside of a council flat.A brutalist concrete shopping precinct.A block of council flats.A Post Office (well, 'Post Service') counter.

he is just comicsy-as-fuck, though. it feels so hard to try and do a "real" version of him played by an actual human. he's a very silly original concept who's been shaped into something good over the years. it's hard to introduce him as a serious guy in the first instance. His name is *Doctor Doom*.
000
columbologist @columbologist.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
really I don't have any expectations for Doomsday, high or low. I am there primarily because I want to see a good adaptation of Dr. Doom. I don't know that it'll be one, I don't even know that a good film version is possible. but Doom is the best Marvel villain and deserves his shot.

columbologist @columbologist.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
couldn't resist reading the Doomsday leak. it does sound ridiculous in places but any summary of a Marvel plot sounds ridiculous, i'm not worried about what it sounds like outside of its medium. I *am* quite surprised that it sounds like they're sticking pretty close to the comics in one aspect.

The other nice surprise about Townfall is that Terry O'Quinn is in it. I had no idea beforehand and was trying to place the voice (thought it might be Tobin Bell for a second) and then the opening credits played and it's John Locke :)

On the whole S1 is fair-to-good, S2 is better, and then S3 is where the show hits the top of its game and it stays strong until the end. Alec Baldwin is consistently the best thing in it though.

columbologist @columbologist.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
It definitely gets better than eps 1 and 2. Takes it a little bit to find the comic voices underneath the caricatures, especially for Tracy and Jenna imo. I dunno about skipping the first season, there's a lot of good stuff in there. It hits more of a stride over the next few episodes.

as always i'm just pleased that there's new Silent Hill and it's not bad. it may never be groundbreaking again, but this "active and competent" era is a damn sight better than the "mediocre, then dead" one.

columbologist @columbologist.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
"hey zoe. how's things, considering recent happenings?" "you mean the current situation? not great." "ah. that's understandable in light of everything that's going on." "yep. i've hidden my back door key in the fishmonger's, due to the crisis." "what else can you do in such trying times"
100
columbologist @columbologist.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
ultimately the atmosphere's good but SH lives or dies on the story, so too early to tell. the mystery's engaging so far but there is a bit of "hey, will one of you fuckers please say *something* specific about what happened in one of the 5000 letters, emails and voicemails you're leaving each other"

columbologist @columbologist.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
(you do figure out pretty quickly that it's a lightly-repainted Critical Path Indicator, but it's *just* cryptic enough that it works. It'll point you in a direction but you still have to pay attention, use and understand your map. you do feel like you're involved, not just following markers.)

The little mini-TV you get in place of the radio is nice. It makes enemy tracking a bit more involved, is used in puzzles and as a cool diegetic way of delivering story and direction. also i had one of those little TVs so it gets further points from me.

And in particular it is a coastal Scottish village, which the main character is returning to. so the second I saw the outline of the town rooftops through the fog I was like "oh my god, it's Silent Hill: Local Hero"

St. Amelia is just a really loving recreation of a UK town in 1996. We were both constantly going "oh, shit, one of *those*, remember those?" i mean, to the point that occasionally it's like "man, I wish this monster would piss off so I could go and admire that period-accurate cash machine"

columbologist @columbologist.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
so far it's not doing anything groundbreaking mechanically, it's a pretty straightforward first-person hidey-horror with very resource-limited combat options. but it's fantastically presented and the attention to detail in the town goes a long, long way to making the slightly rote stealth enjoyable

Finished the RE3 remake tonight with Sam. I hated it when it first came out but every time I revisit it I come a little further around to it. It's not a good version of the original, but once you get past that it's a fun, pacy little action movie. It's short but that means it never loses momentum.

most people don't have to try not to be a lizard. most people are automatically not a lizard. however thanks to shadowrun's "whoops, DNA just does random shit for no reason now" approach to genetics, this lady is not automatically not a lizard and has to make an effort about it.

Zoe's grief is represented by a hydra, because grief can take many forms. And one of those forms is a hydra

columbologist @columbologist.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
I like that Zoe's ultimate foe is unresolved grief over a tragic childhood trauma and Mio's is basically just that she's kinda bitchy. And then you fight Dark Mio and she's a giant sexy robot who's way cooler than Mio and kicks ass.

Finished Split Fiction with Sam. kind of impressive that the characters are so annoying and the dialogue so bad that they manage to make the brilliant gameplay feel like a chore at points. it's arguably the best co-op platformer ever made and Zoe and Mio spend the whole thing begging you to hate it
