It's Friday. I wrote a poem about the spiders who are trying to kill me.
Poem and art. A poem titled, "Ambition" with a black and white drawing of something that might be a spider. The poem begins on the left side of the page, has one line in the middle of the page, and then continues on the right side of the page. The drawing of the spider is on the bottom right.

The text of the poem reads:

"The spiders here are bold.
They stretch their thin lines
all the way across the sidewalk,
from fence to wall,
hoping, I think, to clothesline me,
knock me to the ground,
then rush out to secure me
before I struggle to my feet.
Perhaps they dream of
dragging me into their halls,
to feast like Vikings
at the never-emptied table,
hosting foes and granting rings
and singing songs of victory
about my death."

 It has not worked yet.

Every time
I walk on through their traps,
hardly even pausing in my stride
to let them think they had a chance.
I am a hammer
to their nets and hopes,
inconsiderate and blunt.
And yet, despair does not claim them.
They are persistent hunters,
for every time I take another lap,
and come again into the space
that runs between
the fencing and wall,
I have to wipe away a brand new snare
that some ambitious spider
spun across my path
in futile hopes of glory.

One day, bold friend,
you might be king among the spiders
and fete your shield-kin on my heart.
But not today."

The drawing of the spider is a black and white ink-pen drawing, made of abstract shapes and lines. The spider appears to have wavy hair, which is a little concerning, and deformed pincers. This is not an accurate rendering of a spider, but don't tell it that. It has skeptical eyes.

Daily bunny no.3434 missed the show
A bunny looks at a large terrarium, with plants and a small pool of water. Beside the pool is a note saying "On holiday", which the bunny looks at with confusion. Behind the bunny is a fish tank, and the fish take notice of a green lizard crawling across the wall.

Toot toot! 🐭 🎺 🎉 I’m delighted to reach the milestone of 15,000 followers! Thank you for joining me! Great to see so many of you interested in #Archaeology! Here’s a tiny Roman bronze mouse playing a trumpet! Perhaps too loudly as he’s covering his ear with a paw! 1st-2nd century AD #Archaeology
My photo shows a tiny bronze figurine of a mouse playing a Roman tuba, a long, straight bronze trumpet with a flared bell, used by the Roman military (though not exclusively). The mouse is seen in profile, standing facing left, head tilted upwards playing the trumpet which is held in the mouse’s right paw - right paw not seen in photo. It covers its left ear with its left paw, perhaps the sound of the trumpet is too loud! The figurine is 3.81 centimetres tall. The bronze mouse appears dark grey in colour. Displayed on a thin vertical metal stand on a black plinth against a beige surface and dark brown backdrop.

Small bronze mice statuettes were a very popular motif in Roman times, often attached to oil lamps and lampstands, a reference to the problem of mice gnawing at wicks and drinking lamp oil, a nuisance documented in various ancient texts. They’re often comically shown undertaking human activities out of proportion to their small size, which invoked the Hellenistic and Roman literary and artistic traditions of an ‘inverted world’, as discussed in an article by Philip Kiernan ‘The Bronze Mice of Apollo Smintheus’.

A little bear figurine carved from amber some 6,000 years ago! 🐻❤️ Named ‘Słupcio’ (‘little guy from Słupsk’) through a children’s naming competition! A hole through its torso suggests it was worn or suspended from a cord, perhaps as a hunting amulet. 📷 National Museum in Szczecin #Archaeology
Photo by G. Solecki/A. Piętak of a small figurine of a bear carved out of amber between 9600 and 4100 BC. The amber is a deep translucent orange. The display lighting makes the amber glow. The bear's head is carved to show ears, mouth, nostrils and eyes. A hole runs through the bear's belly, suggesting it was threaded onto a cord. Dimensions: Length 10.2 cm, Height 4.2cm

It was discovered in Słupsk during peat mining in 1887. According to the museum catalogue record "Shortly after its discovery, the figure underwent conservation work to restore its original appearance as it was covered with a layer of dull patina from the exposure to the minerals contained in the peat. Already at that time, at the end of the 19th century, it was assumed the restoration had gone too far. The figure was stripped entirely of patina, the anatomical features of the animal were emphasised, the eyes and nostrils were sharply drawn, and the amber was carefully polished".

In 2013, a competition was organised by the Education Department of the National Museum in Szczecin, for children to choose a name for the bear. The winning name was 'Słupcio’, an affectionate diminutive meaning ‘little guy from Słupsk’.

My postcard for #pae2026 is still available. Not too satisfied with it, but still like the idea. Many, women especially, see signs of age as blemishes. But aren't they just the traces of memories made? Even when our brain forgets, our body will remember. www.postcardartexhibit.com/product-page...

Happy weekend! Ancient clay pots with octopus decoration from Bronze Age Crete some 3,500 years ago! 🐙❤️ Heraklion Archaeological Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo collage shows four pottery vessels, all creamy yellow in colour, with black painted decoration depicting lively stylised octopuses with writhing arms. All on display at Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Crete.

Top L - Minoan storage jar decorated in ‘Marine Style’ with a wide-eyed octopus, argonauts, rocks, and coral. Rounded body which tapers to a narrow circular base. Short cyclindrical neck with black wavy decoration reminiscent of waves. Loop handles attached to the shoulders. Height 55 cm. From Zakros, 1500-1450 BC

Top R - The iconic Minoan ‘Marine Style’ flask. Rounded body with short cyclindrical neck out-flared at rim, and two small curved handles attached between the top of the spout and the shoulders of the flask. An almost cartoon-like octopus, with wide eyes and sucker-lined arms. Other motifs include sea urchins, seaweed and rocks. Height 27cm. From Palaikastro, 1500-1450 BC.

Bottom L - Minoan alabastron, broad at the base, swelling outwards into a fuller belly before narrowing near the top with a very short cyclindrical neck with flat rim. Decorated in “Marine Style” with a wide-eyed octopus among rocks. From Knossos Little Palace, 1450-1370 BC.

Bottom R - ‘krater’ with rounded body narrowing at the bottom towards the foot. Wide flaring mouth and rim with black painted wavy decoration, and two sturdy handles attached on each side between the top of the mouth and shoulders of the vessel. Decorated with a front facing stylised octopus with wide eyes and tentacles which loop up and down around the body of the pot, 1370-1300 BC.

A poem and drawing for the evening. A fair number of the poems that I post are sorrowful. So I thought I'd share something different.
A poem and drawing. The poem is in the upper left part of the page, and is titled, "Enough." The poem's text reads:

"There is never enough of you.
I can pour you out into the bowl of the night, fill the hours up to the brim with the sound of your voice until you run in rivers down the sides of the darkness.
And still I go wanting.
I can lie down with the thought of you, see your smile in my closed eyes,
and, in my sleep, taste each word you've written.
But I miss the solace of your bones.

It isn't you. You are enough.
But there is never enough of you.
- John Wyatt Greenlee"

The drawing sits in the lower right part of the page. It is a black and white drawing made of abstract shapes and lines that looks a bit like a man's head, turned away from you and towards the poem. His hair is slightly wild, and his neck seems sretched out.
