Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 19hDid pinch hitters become sharp plays in the last couple years or something 000
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 20hyeah I get how the run scoring environment is lower but, like, there’s low and then there’s what it seems like they think it is. 100
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 20hI’m such a casual now but Grichuk and double play depth seem like better choices to me 100
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 20hThe truly righteous have nothing to fear they shall be known by their works 010
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 21hAre you telling me they should be doing lots of up/down challenges relative to inside/outside or no? 100
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 22hSimply not helping Messick kind of a big deal here folks. Ty Vargas. 110
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 22hI think this is a long way of saying “yeah it’s quite difficult” 100
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 22hFractions of height don’t provide a visual reference right? 100
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 22hThe batter I think is pretty tough to really use as a reference. For one, he’s not stationary. It’s been a while since I looked into how the top and bottom of the zone are actually drawn though. 100
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 22hHonestly crazy that BJM has ever been hired to do anything. Also man those quotes from Wink about how he finally found an LBs coach he wasn’t constantly mad it are too funny. 150
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 23hI’m sure there’s actual analysis that’s been done here but seems like challenging up and down is pure guesswork bc there’s no strong reference point. Outside the most obvious spot bc parallax, inside should basically just not happen. 120
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 08/10/2026(1) Sure, but it’s worth describing what we got if we want to noodle on it (2) Krugman used to drudge this up a lot bc SV types were always complaining GDP was fake and their effects on the economy couldn’t possibly be that small 010
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 08/10/2026iirc the Krugman take is that we got a one time level bump in the 90s but the rate of productivity growth didn’t actually change. 120

Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Oh sure I get that angle of attack is different now and that going up in the zone has been the response. But I’m trying to decide what I expect the right equilibrium is. I think it’s actually just a ball that doesn’t carry on contact? 100
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I hadn’t really considered what BABIP vs HR rate looks like by location 100
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 07/10/2026They understand the first level basics but to be good at it you need to understand all the possible looks you might see and how that changes the combinations. They also run it with a true Q read and a lot more mechanics on the back end and they use a Rhino now so the way they run it changed a lot. 010
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 07/10/2026right their favorables are bad but they're not "we are clearly incompetent and corrupt" bad and their reputation w progs is intact. 000
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 06/10/2026And with sufficiently cheap inputs (guys who don’t have big contracts or other leverage in the league) you can turn this into an optimization problem with your givens being the legit starters or relievers you have or will have to pay for. 010
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 06/10/2026The 1.0 version of this is simply realizing that the 2013 defn of replacement level reliever was an average starter. The 2.0 version is realizing that (assuming health) there’s an output curve for every pitcher. 200 IP produces X ERA, 150 IP is X - N, 100 is X - N*2 etc. 210
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 06/10/2026this year. they were very clear on having done very little tackling in fall camp. 110
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I think quite clearly the offense was better coached last year than the defense and there was far more tolerance for nonsense. They reportedly barely tackled in practice. Jay's not this wildly charismatic dude who can clearly relate to 20 yr olds from Detroit. And yet here we are. 1130
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Hill got to bring fewer position coaches and has zero experience coaching outside the state of Utah. There's very little overlap in the '21-'25 D and Hill's D. The terminology, calls, and techniques are different. Even the same coverages are played with significant differences. 190
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 05/10/2026After checking with trusted sources (@rossrfulton.bsky.social) think I officially am Extremely Over the frequency and technique of their pulling OL on hard PAP from Gun. Please stop doing it away from the TE side. Plz stop making tackles (best pass protectors!) to do it. It's just asking for it. 070

Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 05/10/2026it's quite bad and totally confounding. i can't think of a problem i expected to encounter less than this. 120
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 05/10/2026TL;DR Michigan ran the ball downhill a ton and simplified by running a lot more IZ, their base play from last year. It still did not work bc the OL's problems aren't a function of the specific call. They didn't get taught how to block any of these runs in camp. 390
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 05/10/2026We have a few things we do to mix this up but not nearly enough. If you get X or Slot Jet, the odds of the snap being when you think it is are quite high. What’s the cost for being wrong? Have we had an offsides call from messing w this enough? 150
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 05/10/2026On the run tip + snap tip, I saw what might have been some auto checks from Minnesota vs jet. That is, if you get jet from the slot, we play Call X. Even if not, these blitzes often worked very well vs jet bc you get a snap indicator which lets you hide the blitz longer. 140
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 05/10/2026On the jet stuff, we’re reducing the number of carries but still run a ton of the motion. So we reduced one harm but it’s also a huge run tip, it’s also a snap tip, and ALSO it contributes to the problems the OL is having ID’ing and getting out to the 2nd level bc the 2nd level shifts with it. 160
Manuel Excel @colintj.bsky.social · 05/10/2026On rewatch Beck put a big focus on inside zone in this game but the same problems we have with the single puller power stuff were there too. The OL consistently does not know who it is targeting on the second level. It’s fine to good on the first. 1130
