Osaka Castle, Japan. Photography by tomoya mino
Rising triumphantly above towering cyclopean stone walls and autumn foliage, the main keep (tenshukaku) of Osaka Castle ignites under a dramatic twilight sky swept with fiery orange and indigo clouds. The multi-tiered white plaster walls, emerald-green copper roof tiles, and gilded ornaments—including golden tiger reliefs (fukora) and protective mythical dolphin finials (kinshachi)—catch the warm, fading light of dusk. In the lower foreground, a traditional golden-roofed pleasure boat (wasen) glides along the quiet water of the moat beneath massive, dry-laid granite ramparts (ishigaki). The photograph evokes a dramatic sensory atmosphere: the cool evening breeze filtering through autumn leaves, the soft lap of water against dark stone walls, the gentle creak of wooden oars moving through the moat, and the breathtaking silence that settles over the historic grounds as day turns to night. Photographed by Tomoya Mino, this image captures one of Japan's most monumental historical landmarks. Originally commissioned in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as the majestic center of a unified Japan, Osaka Castle played a pivotal role in the Sengoku (Warring States) and early Edo periods. Though destroyed and rebuilt multiple times—most notably after the Siege of Osaka in 1615 and lightning strikes during the Edo period—the main keep was faithfully reconstructed in 1931 using reinforced concrete while preserving its historic Momoyama-period aesthetic.

Triptych Place Balconies #london #england #britain #uk #gb #architecture #photography #monochrome #blackandwhite
A black-and-white photograph looking upwards between the modern residential buildings of Triptych Place in Bankside, London. The façades are dominated by successive rows of projecting balconies with sweeping, undulating edges, outlined by bright white fascia panels and enclosed by slender, dark metal railings. The balconies curve in alternating directions, creating a striking, rhythmic pattern of flowing horizontal lines against the buildings’ darker undersides. Between the two main sections, reflective vertical cladding and tall windows add contrasting textures and narrow strips of light. The tightly framed, upward-looking composition emphasises the height, sculptural geometry and repetitive patterns of the architecture, while the monochrome treatment highlights the contrast between light balcony edges, deep shadows and metallic surfaces.

From Renault factories to contemporary art center, the story of Paris's 'cursed' Seguin Island
On October 17, Le Large will open its doors. A small miracle given the many projects that have fallen through after Renault left the island, just west of Paris, in 1992. But the story is not over: the center of the island remains conspicuously empty.

Hosen-in Temple, Ohara, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City, Japan
Framed by the dark, rectangular timber posts and lintels of a temple hall, a snow-dusted garden panorama unfolds from the quiet interior of a tatami room. In the immediate foreground, a brilliant crimson felt carpet (mōsen) spans the floorboards, its vivid warmth cutting through the cool, monochromatic winter light outside. Through the triple-pane opening of the sliding frames, the massive, lichen-encrusted limbs of a monumental five-needle pine (Goyō-no-matsu) reach horizontally across the space, their heavy boughs dusted in fresh snow and supported by slender bamboo pillars. In the soft, muted background, snow-draped bamboo groves and a patinated stone lantern (ishidōrō) complete the serene winter scene.

Nestled in the quiet northern valley of Ōhara in Sakyō-ku, Kyoto, Hōsen-in is an ancient Tendai sect temple historically affiliated with nearby Sanzen-in and the preservation of shōmyō (Buddhist liturgical chanting). The temple’s main shoin (drawing hall) is celebrated for codifying the concept of gakubuchi teien—the "picture-frame garden"—wherein architectural pillars, thresholds, and lintels intentionally frame the exterior courtyard as if it were an active, living hanging scroll (kakejiku). At the heart of this view stands the famous 700-year-old Goyō-no-matsu, trained over centuries of horticultural mastery to evoke the fluid form of a soaring dragon, offering visitors seated on the red mōsen a quiet sanctuary for seasonal contemplation.

Aesthetically, the composition presents a definitive realization of gakubuchi teien combined with miegakure (the design principle of hide-and-reveal), using structural architecture to pare away the surrounding world and direct focus toward the natural landscape. The low wooden sill and surrounding posts form a distinct kekkai (sacred threshold), separating the warm, meditative interior from the frosty exterior.
