We posted an RA job and got 150 applicants in 48 hours. I can understand why many employers have switched to AI screening (we don't). People using AI to apply for jobs that are screened and rejected by AI, using huge amounts of processing power and energy in a pointless cycle. Modern life.

I work in brain imaging in psychiatry. I had conferences, I keep hearing " MRIs too expensive" absurd! If you have Parkinson's, MS, Alzheimer's, nobody questions MRI cost for clinical use. Many people receive multiple scans. If the MRI reduces average hospital stays 0.5 days, it pays for itself.

I am recruiting a new graduate student for September. Comp neuroscience type approaches, definitely fmri based. Possible specific topics include dense longitudinal scanning in psychosis, or the effects of psilocybin on brain function in depression. Look me up and send me an email if interested.

Paper rejected on revision. Reviewer was complaining that we didn't find the relationship we originally hypothesized, and we should rename/frame the paper based on a subsequent finding. They were obliging us to HARK. Which is exactly what we're not supposed to do. So much for apriori hypotheses.

When I was young and broke, the bank would take money out of my account because I was too poor (ime. Student loads came out at a random time and my account went negative) Now I have money and that means I get some extra free money every year. This seems backwards somehow.

Sometimes, I think research is the process of removing, for example, 121 characters of 23 words from some text of it fits some size limit, while still retaining its meaning. Superfluous words, I CAST THEE OUT! EDIT: Research is the process of editing text to fit size limits, but retaining meaning.

Just reviewed a paper on psilocybin, I think was AI generated. I can't believe the editor sent out. Methods very brief and point form, used several non clinical samples but not clear what they were actually used for, results was 4 tables of "statistics" and virtually zero text. Wooooow.

Over the past few years, one of the biggest obstacles to me performing research has turned out to be lawyers. Even the simplest agreements seem to take a year. We are doing the same thing over and over again, and they continuously insist to reinvent the wheel. It's wild. It's a Mel Brooks movie.

I can't respect anybody who complains about "woke". The foundational concept here is the treat other people with respect, and recognize the challenges that other people who are not you face in life. That doesn't seem like a high bar. It's just a cheap target for people with no better ideas.

Thanks to everyone's feedback, we have updated our calculator to optimize sample size N & scan time T for fMRI studies: leonoqr.github.io/ORSP_Calcula... The first new feature is that users can explore how different N & T leads to different accuracy, e.g., N=1000 & T=30min => 81% max accuracy. 🧵
