Last year, I publicly complained multiple times (see e.g. elevanth.org/blog/2025/07...) that the open access movement had been captured by publishers, and we are now worse off than before open access. Well people got mad at me for saying it. But I think things are still getting worse.

Necessary and sufficient is a gold standard in genetics thought to mean key importance. Which often becomes a way to say we know it all so why do more. However, necessary and sufficient is only true in the specific background tested, so likely way more going on.

Remember the spectacular claims from three years ago, that science is supposedly becoming less disruptive? Seems this was at least in part due to data artifacts. To be fair, the authors of the original study push back, that the new study is flawed as well. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I know it seems like a heretical idea, but one way to figure out if a preprint is really interesting (to you) is... to read the preprint. Then, in the spirit of sharing, send a note to authors: a simple kudos or a more detailed question. I do this a dozen times a year. It's awesome. Try it.

The Vatican Museums' Bramante Staircase provides a striking visual metaphor for a vicious feedback cycle in scholarly publishing: rising paper submissions across an expanding landscape of journals strains the limited supply of volunteer peer review labor, which in turn makes editorial decisions less predictable and encourages authors to submit their work more ambitiously, increasing the burden on peer reviewers further still.
