I like to deploy "mundane" for this question, as in "is this text interested in representing a/the world, or is it interested in doing something else?"

I felt a little bad about not doing my seasonal university press recommendation lists this year, so I decided to go over all the spring and fall catalogs for 2026 to create a list c. 60 books from 32 presses. Hope this is helpful to folks!

I got the reissue of this a while a back and it does rule, imo. Good additional material for thinking about Moorcock, mediation, and stuff like Elric/Eternal Champion/Jerry Cornelius.

It is absolutely best as a jumping off point and not as a clear/dogmatic theory! (Also best utilized alongside other writing by Fisher and problematized by the work of other weird theorists!)

Even attention to specific language goes a long way! If a weird text is doing something interesting with regards to climate change then it has to be doing it through representation, style, etc. Better to unlock that and give a fuller picture of how we might read those formal cues.

Cody R Brown @codyrbrown.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
This is something I'm super mindful of avoiding. Yes, weird fiction provides an interesting vantage to consider climate change, but it is interesting because of how it is able to approach those problems through form as opposed to in spite of/regardless of form.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
An aircraft passenger oxygen mask: a drop down passenger mask with air bag and yellow plastic mouth and nose cover, oxygen tube has been cut; Demonstration model used by flight attendant crew for passenger instruction. Has text on the side indicating that it's non-functional.

this review is so odd! it seems a bad tactic to me to extrapolate about the weird and its place in the contemporary from this limited set of texts (especially from a critic who apparently studies weird fiction)!

As an MJH diehard I pre-ordered The End of Everything (the signed Blackwell's edition) from the UK, received it in the post, and finished reading it last week. Rest assured: it's got the juice. So pleased it's getting this sort of recognition.

We are asking the WSFS business meeting to extend this story’s eligibility until 2026, because it received extremely limited distribution in 2025. Only 5,000 copies of the print edition were distributed in late 2025, to a primarily non-SFF audience. It became available online on July 9, 2026. 1/2

Idaho pushed anti-trans laws for years. Then a teen died.
The life and death of May Pollard, 16, provides a window into the tragic effect that legislation and political rhetoric have had on trans people in America.

HR 822 requires trusted adults (school employees, counselors, coaches as well as doctors & other health workers) to monitor children for signs of gender stereotype non-conformance and report them. Non-compliance results in steep fines and criminal punishment. This goes into effect in Idaho today.

whether or not the agents are truly "sentient" in a meaningful way is beside the point, the structural logic of producing a new slavery still stands.

(it's because they basically want slaves: conscious entities—but software this time!—that they can use and dispose of when convenient. this is the big tech logic of "sentient AI.")
