🎉 I don’t do unboxing videos, but here is a pic of my translator’s copies of Petra Hůlová’s novel THE LONG VERSION, out next month from @worldedbooks.bsky.social ! 📚 Pre-order now: worldeditions.org/product/the-...
Photo showing copies of a book in a cardboard box. On left, front cover: The Long Version. A novel. Petra Hůlová. Translated by Alex Zucker. On right, back cover : “Petra Hůlová is one of the most distinctive and outspoken Czech writers of her generation.” — Project Plume

In her early fifties, Czech author Sylvie Novak looks back on her successful career. As she embarks on a tour to promote her book of feminist essays, her adolescent daughter Judita finds her teenage journals, discovering the intimate relationship she had with a much older writer. Judita is convinced the experience scarred her for life, whereas Novak considers her daughter’s views to be ignorant and absolutist, however critical she is toward the deep-seated machismo of Eastern European dissident cultures.

In THE LONG VERSION, we become spectators of Novak’s tightrope walk, balancing between the old generation and the new, love and desire, and above all the myriad interpretations of the past. Like Hůlová, Novak seeks not to lay blame or win sympathy, but to explore the shifting meanings of feminism at a time of polarized thinking.

“Can a woman wake up one day and say #MeToo twenty years after the fact? Or does she have to be a member of the #MeToo generation to do that? An extraordinary novel about culture wars in our everyday life.” — Tereza Matějčková, philosopher

For @thesundaylongread.bsky.social this week, brief thoughts on Carolina Pihelgas's The Cut Line, out in English translation by Darcy Hurford from @worldedbooks.bsky.social. Fantastically atmospheric book, and a quick read.
Partial text from screenshot from The Sunday Long Read:

The Cut Line
By Carolina Pihelgas, translated by Darcy Hurford
Right at the beginning of this novel from Estonia, the narrator goes into the garden and digs for an hour "in a completely arbitrary patch," which, she says, "is a time-honored method of banishing thoughts." And this seems necessary, because her ex's voice is relentless in her head; she can't stop thinking about the toxicity and control of their long relationship, of all the horrible things he said to her. She ruminates as she examines what remains in the house they shared—a long, blunt knife (part of a recurring theme in the book: the knife, an axe, a scythe); a drawerful of plastic spoons; the lawn that needs mowing.
This is a quiet, dryly wise novel by Carolina Pihelgas, sad but not overly so. The narrator is performing an autopsy of a relationship that once felt good and hopeful, and coming to an understanding of what she had lost-herself, and her power. Set against her internal (and generally positive) unravelling is her environment, suffused with dread, and just as exquisitely depicted as her internal life: The country she's in is dealing with climate change and is also in the midst of war ("When everything is quiet, when the guns aren't firing, this is the most beautiful place in the world"). In theory, this may seem like too many large themes to tackle in such a slim novel, but Pihelgas manages the balance-not unlike her narrator, who describes herself as "swaying on the cut line that separates my previous life from what's to come," but who, the reader comes to believe, will do just fine in the end.

About the Book In the round house on Via Saterna, its Palladian square exterior nothing but a trompe-l’oeil, the sun pierces through the central skylight. Its rays pass three floors unobstructed, before reaching the circle below at the heart of the house: four fingers of water filling a little silver basin. It is here that young Lidia dies, setting an end to her clandestine love affair with the ambitious architect.
