Pope Leo is spitting. www.npr.org/2025/10/09/n...
Leo questioned a world where the wealth of the elite grows
"exponentially" while many "millions of people die of hunger or survive in conditions unfit for human beings." He also criticized "ideologies that defend the absolute autonomy of the marketplace and financial speculation,"
with false promises "that a free-market economy will automatically solve the problem of poverty."

Leo described a "new tyranny," which shuns any kind of oversight and where the economy is structured "in such a way that sacrifices are demanded of the masses in order to serve the needs of the powerful." The poor, he wrote, are only allowed "drops that trickle down."

The pope openly challenged "prosperity theology" and called Christians to the practice of giving charity. "It will not solve the problem of world poverty, yet it must still be carried out, with intelligence, diligence and social responsibility," he wrote.

Popular movements that challenge "the empire of money," invite people to take on the cause to combat poverty alongside the poor, instead of on their behalf, and "make history," the pope said. It our duty, Leo said, to "make their voices heard, albeit in different ways, in order to point out and denounce such structural issues, even at the cost of appearing foolish or naïve."

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.
"WE'VE ARRANGED A society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. Who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it?"
"Science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking. A way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along."

I think some people on this app need to read this. And I hope people will remember that progressive Democrats say they are about decency, empathy, and kindness, and not respond to this post with personal insult and mean, nasty comments.

I’m obviously not a Palestinian-American, but I know what many of my Palestinian-American friends would say.

They would say that Joe Biden, for 13 months, provided advanced weaponry to Israel, enabling the killing of tens of thousands of Palestinians.

They would say that the White House repeatedly told reporters how angry Biden was with Netanyahu, but Biden never forcefully expressed that anger publicly.

They would say that he claimed to be morally outraged but didn’t have the backbone to make a group of displaced people and their family members feel like the President of the United States was truly aware of their suffering.

They would say that he failed time and time again to show empathy toward the Palestinian people while having an unlimited amount for Israelis.

And what would many of them say about Donald Trump?

Most would say they can’t stand him, but at least he finalized a ceasefire that had languished for many months after being negotiated.

They would say that his Gaza/Egypt/Jordan idea is stupid, ineffective, and offensive, but it’s just that—words.

And those words were quickly dismissed by Jordan and Egypt.

And regarding his release of the 2,000-pound bombs?

They would point out that Biden allowed Israel to buy those bombs for many months before putting a hold on them.

So what’s the difference, they’d say?

Have Palestinian-American leaders who supported Trumps reelection commented on the president’s idea to send all Palestinians in Gaza to other countries? If they have, post links below. Thank you.

This goes hard
Extremely long tweet by Colombian president Gutavo Petro, auto-translated from Spanish. Continued in next post.

Trump, I don't really like traveling to the US, it's a bit boring, but I confess that there are some worthy things, I like going to the black neighborhoods of Washington, there I saw an entire fight in the US capital between blacks and Latinos with barricades, which seemed like bullshit to me, because they should unite. I confess that I like Walt Whitman and Paul Simon and Noam Chomsky and Miller. I confess that Sacco and Vanzetti, who have my blood, in the history of the US, are memorable and I follow them. They were murdered by labor leaders with the electric chair, the fascists who are inside the US as well as inside my country. I don't like your oil, Trump, you are going to end the human species because of greed. Maybe one day, over a shot of whiskey, which I accept, despite my gastritis, we can talk frankly about this, but it's difficult because you consider me an inferior race and I am not, nor is any Colombian. So if you know someone who is stubborn, that's me, period. You can, with your economic strength and your arrogance, try to carry out a coup d'état as they did with Allende. But I will die in my law, 1 resisted torture and I resist you. I do not want slavers next to Colombia, we already had many and we freed ourselves. What I want next to Colombia are lovers of freedom. If you cannot accompany me, I will go elsewhere. Colombia is the heart of the world and you did not understand it, this is the land of the yellow butterflies, of the beauty of Remedios, but also of the colonels Aureliano Buendía, of whom I am one, perhaps the last. You will kill me, but I will survive in my town which is before yours, in the Americas. We are peoples of the winds, the mountains, the Caribbean Sea and of freedom. You do not like our freedom, okay. I do not shake hands with white slavers. I shake the

I really needed this poem today and maybe you do too? "Good Bones," by the wonderful Maggie Smith. www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/89897/...
Life is short, though I keep this from my children.
Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways
I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least
fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative
estimate, though I keep this from my children.
For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.
For every loved child, a child broken, bagged,
sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children. I am trying
to sell them the world. Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real shithole, chirps on
about good bones: This place could be beautiful,
right? You could make this place beautiful.
