Happy World Linguistics Day! Celebratory days take off when groups of people decide to make them happen so... let's see how many different locations we can get world linguistics day wishes from this year!
Green background with three white globes showing different aspects of earth (top to bottom Asia/Oceania, North and South America, and Africa and Europe). Around each globe are the words 'Happy World Linguistics Day! November 26th'.

"Pat, why do you carry that ridiculous 600mm lens on long hikes?" Buddy, I can see mountains reflected in the eyes of a trailside pika.
A pika sits on a mossy rock.Tighter crop of the same pika, focusing on its head.An even tighter crop, focusing more on the pika's eye.An extremely tight crop of the pika's eye, emphasizing their reflection of an early morning mountain scene.

Despite this guy’s claims, „troll”, „shitpost” and „fap” are older than 4chan, at least. „Troll” (first attested in 1993) and „shitpost” (1994) from Usenet, „fap” from the webcomic Sexy Losers (1999). 4chan was created in 2003. Ironic given how he talks about forgetting where words originate. 🐦🐦
Screenshot of Etymologynerd on Facebook with video talking about how many „GenZ slang” words supposedly originate on 4chan, listing „weeb”, „troll”, „dank”, „fap” among others.

My absolute favorite part of the dead salmon wearing trend (scientists are, as the article says, reasonably sure it's a fashion trend) is not that orcas have fashion, it's that they, too, have the occasional wave of 80s nostalgia.

To accompany all those Bluesky science/academia #starterpacks, how about we also share introductions to the literature of our different fields. I present here a handy guide to main types of papers in the language sciences (inspired by the amazing @xkcd.com). #language #linguistics #science #academia
Comic depictions of the first page of research papers in the language sciences, with titles that include the following:
Just what the hell is a word anyway?
See how this single cognitive process or brain area or neural oscillation or gene explains language!
Based on the shapes of these old bones, Homo erectus could sing .... don't @ me.
A baby looked at one thing more than the other, now we know the secret to grammar.
If you think about it, every language is fundamentally the same, amirite?
We taught a load of undergrads a made-up language, lol.
On the staggering diversity of the many languages across the world.
Remember the thing you said only humans could do, here's a video of a monkey / dolphin / corvid / octopus / honeybee doing it.
I trained this AI with 80 billion tweets and it became head-writer for phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There remain many bright spots on Reddit, chief among which is r/linguisticshumor: www.reddit.com/r/linguistic...
A post from the linguisticshumor subreddit with the title "Wug Anatomy." It's a line drawing of an imaginary creature called a "Wug" that resembles a bird, in profile; it has a pointed tail and mouth somewhat like a beak and two legs. Arrows point to the tail and beak and call them the "posterior kiki" and "anterior kiki," respectively. Two more arrows point to its rounded head and belly and call these the "posterior bouba" and "anterior bouba," respectively. My reply to this post explains the origin.

When you look up a word in the dic•tio•nary, the dots in the middle of the word aren't there to mark out the syllables of the word; they mark where you can put a hyphen if the word doesn't fit on one line. Sometimes that corresponds with syllables, sometimes not. (See "dictionary" above!)

Going to share something I always think after releasing a podcast, because you never feel like you got it quite right. You said what you felt was right in that moment, and if you're second-guessing yourself, maybe it's because you're no longer in that moment, and it was fine. You did fine.
