Gardenia thunbergia also has semi-dry, woody fruits, but they remain attached to the parent plant & are browsed by antelopes, specifically the greater & lesser kudus (Tragelaphus spp.). If not eaten, the fruits decay & skeletonize, like this one in California. #Gardenia #Rubiaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

The Long-wattled Umbrellabird (Cephalopterus penduliger) are the weirdest birds, from pompadour/mohawk to long fleshy neck-tie shaped wattle that converts to a feather duster on command. Native to the Pacific coasts of Ecuador & Colombia, these extraordinary accessories are mostly found in males.

I wasn’t expecting this color combination last night when I set up the lights. This is Hypomolis roseicincta. It is mostly green, but if you catch it from the right angle, you get to see its pink face and legs. Only 13 observations on @inaturalist.bsky.social

Just back from a massive Scout/Guide jamboree. 10,000+ people! Totally exhausted but the absolute highlight for me was they had robots from Robot Wars (UK version) and I’ve realised how much I miss watching robots get crushed, smashed, flipped and cut up by other robots. 🤖

I know we’ve had a lot of rain lately, but this puffball mushroom is really going for it. Calvatia sp., probably a purple-spored puffball C. cyathiformis, although I’ve never seen one that big before. #fungi
A large off-white mushroom with two brownish dented patches grows from the leaf litter. A hand with the thumb outstretched is next to it for scale; the fingers are only 2/3 of the height and the thumb is only half the width. It could believably be a skull cap of a smallish human if you didn’t look too closely.

Velvet worms shoot rapid-hardening glue at their prey (other invertebrates). Within seconds, the sprayed liquid hardens to plastic-like consistency, trapping or slowing the target. This marvelous glue has possible human applications in recyclable bioplastics & surgical sutures that dissolve.

Hey Bluesky! Emerging from my dissertation-formatting cave to share that I defended my PhD last week! So many incredible people helped me reach this point, especially over the last few months as I scrambled to finish in time. I’m lucky to be surrounded by such good friends.

The strangest thing happened today. We went to the uninhabited island of Lunga, west of Mull, to look at the puffins nesting there. I was just taking photos when I felt a thump as something landed quite heavily in my head. It was a puffin! It stayed for about a minute before flying off.
