Oct 4, 1873: over a weekend, the Grand Trunk converts its 421-mile (678 km) main line between Stratford and Montreal from broad to standard gauge. The task was made easier since it was partially done on a Sunday, when there was virtually no activity over the line.
An ad from the Kingston Daily British Whig, October 4, 1873, notifying passengers of the arrangement of trains during the change of gauge of its tracks. An illustration of 19th century railway track workers (or "navvies" as they were colloquially known) adjusting the gauge of a section of track using iron pry bars. Further down the track, other workers are re-spiking the shifted rail using spike mauls, while even further down is a work train hauled by a steam locomotive.

Sep 17, 1851: the Boston Railroad Jubilee begins, celebrating the international rail connection between that city and Montreal. Among the American luminaries attending the Jubilee were U.S. President Millard Fillmore and Secretary of State Daniel Webster.
A painting by William Sharp depicting the Boston Railroad Jubilee on the Boston Common, September 17, 1851. U.S. President Millard Fillmore is depicted arriving in a carriage drawn by six white horses while a military regiment stands at attention nearby and a large crowd looks on. Tall trees surround the clearing where the people have gathered and a United States flag flies from a pole to the right side of the image.

Last day of running trains at the fair. Felt like an appropriate day for a last run of the milk train. No Railway Post Office car, as they usually weren’t run on Sundays.

Sep 5, 1960: the Grand Trunk (New England) ends year-round Montreal-Portland, Maine passenger service. Summer-only service ran until 1966. Portland was once the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada's eastern terminus, with considerable passenger traffic between it and Montreal.
The crew from the last run of Grand Trunk train No. 16 waves for the camera after arriving at Portland, Maine on September 5, 1960 behind GP9 No. 4905. The train crew consisted of (from left to right) C.C. Palmer, fireman; J.R. Foss, engineer; J.A.Cargill, baggageman; W.G.Cole, trainman and D.J. O'Dowd, conductor. Sep 4, 1966: the Boston & Maine Railroad ends all of its intercity passenger train operations. It continued to run commuter trains in the Boston area, subsidized by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

I took some better photos without the crowd when I returned for the northbound train. Overall I’m very impressed! Being able to get off the train in Brattleboro WITHOUT feeling like i was about to fall off a cliff was SO NICE!

Last Wednesday I took Amtrak’s Vermonter down to the grand opening of the new station in Brattleboro VT! the train pulled in at the end of the festivities, but It was a very nice welcoming! The new station is a huge improvement over the former Amtrak waiting room and platform.

Exciting Amtrak news from Vermont! A new station is having its grand opening in Brattleboro Vermont this Wednesday! From what i can find, It's going to be the 4th station building to serve passengers in Brattleboro, replacing the current Amtrak waiting room at the base of the former station.

Happy birthday to the 'L' 🥳 On this day in 1892, the South Side Rapid Transit railroad company began regular service on Chicago's first elevated train. The line initially ran from Congress to 39th Street (now Pershing), largely using alleys--earning it the nickname "The Alley 'L'."

Feather is standing on a platform, leaning over the side slightly, as if looking for a train. The signboard on the platform is indicating a hefty delay.

Say what you will about Amtraks food option, but I’m just glad to have a cafe car attached to the train for the full run. Having the option to get up and get a snack whenever (as long as it’s open) is fantastic. from what I can tell it’s better than the 1960s “sandwich service“
