#Lurch hated the walk to the lounge bar, the Shadows between each table, the Mixture of glasses and the fear his Outsize feet would catch a chairleg or a Handbag strap hanging down. There were no handbags to be seen in the Straightglass world of the public bar, Lurch could Stand tall there. #vss365

In the #tempest blowing from the right I picture Prospero adrift On the rotten carcass of democracy Swearing off the promise of soulless Psephology & trusting in the Future, in people who neither know nor Recognise me, who I trust will do their best And remake whichever island I alight upon. #vss365

The correlation between risk of hypothermia and lack of crime is obvious.

To be fair, some of the processes by which it happened have a lot less to do with retail than with financial engineering - the collapse of Woolworths is a good example, and explains why their properties were often occupied by other retailers trading in a similar market segment.

One of my many regrets is the lack of community newspapers in the area I live in - little glimpses of activity like this make me smile

A certain scepticism about Dylan is always going to win me over (he's the lesser Thomas of the Welsh 20th century for me) but for Pete's sake, plagiarism as you try to learn to write is almost inevitable!

#vss365 #delivery The spin doctor addressed the caucus of Client journalists supine in their Joyful submission and waved a wad of copy. "It's all about #delivery" and like the paperboy I used to be I wondered about unpainted impoverished doors that the delivery men walked past. #itsalwayspolitical

I was lucky enough to be at the online launch of this terrific book last night & was struck by how much context is everything. In the week that a GSRD woman was killed by the new stormtroopers of the American regime a book that might otherwise have been a celebratio looks like part of the fightback.

Yup, its cold outside, it snowed more overnight but as ever the dawn brings promises of better to come...

A snowy field, with houses to the right and a dockyard in the distance, with the sun rising through leaden clouds.

If I'd suggested that you'd be right to question me, but I didn't. Labour Link is about much more than just ballots - regional officers in my experience routinely interfere in areas of LL work around individual CLPs, targeting of campaigning work and selections.

as therapists it is imperative we dont work with issues that are unresolved for us - for example if we are grieving a loved one we shouldn't be doing grief work. A family therapist who cant see that no contact is a valid choice cannot ethically do family therapy

One of the strategic choices of the GCs is to go after matters which don't engage big issues of public policy - they're much happier arguing about toilets and changing rooms than equal pay for instance.

I'm not sure that's a good analogy. We are gradually moving away from treating children as offenders in such cases: the offender is the 54 year old man, not the child. The rule that medical consent is different to sexual consent may not make sense to some people, but it's long established and works.

How do the majority of kids, who don't go to university, benefit from this scheme? How do the majority of kids who do go to university, who don't go on Erasmus, benefit from it? It looks like a middle class subsidy that should be low down anyone's list of priorities...

As @jamesmeek.bsky.social pointed out in the latest @lrb.co.uk there's was a persistent anti EU faction in the Labour Party, including the people who nominated Corbyn - his stance on Brexit was neither a surprise nor inconsistent even if it was tactically foolish and economic self harm.

One of Barber's acolytes who ended up at another Durham college expected me to be appalled that the very fine portrait of him that the college have was by the excellent Lizzie Rowe, and claimed that Hatfield would never have commissioned Lizzie if they knew about her life journey.

We probably all need , carefully, to distinguish between workers rights and trades union rights - especially in a time a time when the majority of workers aren't unionised and even trades union members may have serious political doubts about the party trades union bureaucrats choose to fund.

One of the curiosities about this argument is that the BBC does claim it has some overarching set of Reithian values that define what is special about it - but only when that claim works to its benefit. I do love to see you using the old fashioned maximalist argument too - but I disagree.
