A delegation of Indigenous leaders and advocates from Nevada visited Canada last month to raise the alarm about the human rights harms of two Canadian-owned lithium mining projects. At a press conference on Parliament Hill, Mary Gibson and Fermina Stevens, two leaders in the struggle to protect the rights and territory of the Western Shoshone and Paiute Peoples, called on the Canadian government to uphold its responsibility to ensure that mining companies registered in this country respect Indigenous rights abroad. Representatives from Amnesty International joined them to speak about the conclusions and urgent calls to action outlined in Amnesty’s new research briefing “We’re Here to Protect Mother Earth: Indigenous Rights and Nevada’s New Lithium Boom.”Check out the full press conference:youtube.com/watch?v=guYkMfaa5GQ🔗 Read the full report:amnesty.ca/human-rights-news/nevada-lithium-mining-boom-indigenous-rights-violations/
