A simple lab change could help speed up the search for treatments for inherited blindness. CMRI researchers found that growing lab-based retinal models in a different culture solution, BrainPhys, could make gene therapy testing faster and cheaper. Read the research: ow.ly/nUnh50ZMpRL

A child's growing liver has long worked against #genetherapy. #CMRI researchers found a way to repair the faulty gene at its source instead of adding a copy that gets diluted over time. Early results are promising. Full publication here: doi.org/10.1016/j.ymthe.2026.06.044

Congrats to Prof Tony Cesare on being awarded an NHMRC Investigator Grant (L2)! Tony is Head of the Genome Integrity Research Unit at CMRI and his research on how cells protect DNA is driving new approaches to cancer treatment. This grant will support his research over the next 5 years.

1/2 We are delighted to announced that Dr Ashley Yang has received a three-year fellowship from Maddie Rieworldt’s Vision to offer hope for children living with telomere-related bone marrow disorders. Dr Yang hopes to lay the groundwork for personalised gene therapies for patients.

I had a fantastic few days at the 🧬 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲, 𝗗𝗡𝗔 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 at the Melbourne Museum, which I attended with many colleagues from @cmri.bsky.social It was an excellent meeting filled with inspiring science and engaging talks. Looking forward to the next one in 2027!
