Questions from strangers

Strangers may ask if there’s an event going on, what you’re dressed as etc. I often just tell people if it’s a simple answer, however if it’s not I have a few go-to “excuses” to avoid getting into it with people, like:
- school project
- photoshoot
- birthday party

Feeling the eyes on you

Seeing people stare at you or feeling people’s eyes on you in a public spaces can be distressing. A distraction can be helpful. I usually take out my phone and text a friend, look around on social media, play a game, call someone or PRETEND to call someone… having something to engage with makes me feel more confident.

Easier in groups

Of course there is safety in numbers, so if you can travel in a group with other cosplayers (or a non-cosplaying friend) that can feel a lot better! If you’re heading to an event connect with friends to plan the trip together.

I was on a podcast where kids quizzed two people to decide who was a fake and who was a real expert. The host said early on the kids thought the fake was the expert every time because the actors answered every question confidently and the experts would hedge or even sometimes say "I don't know". They eventually told the fakes to be less confident so the kids would pick the expert sometimes.

It just occurred to me this is now real life with chatGPT, but nobody is telling it to back off.
