In 2016 Leave had all the emotion and Remain was stuck defending the ‘boring’ status quo. Soon Rejoin may get all the longing and the loss while Leave have to factually defend how it’s gone. There’s a beautiful symmetry in there somewhere.Meanwhile: (not sourced-but funny nonetheless) #r4today

The 50,000 prison places? That’s a nice round number to quote. Perhaps they’re being built where the 50,000 nurses, 40 new hospitals and nationwide gigabit broadband were meant to go. Tories love an infrastructure promise, especially one with a catchy number. Put Lord Grayling on it… #r4today

Why is the public confused about wealth taxes and climate change? Because for 40+ years, lobby groups and think tanks have been paid to confuse them. And it started with Thatcher pulling off one of the greatest financial cons in modern history. 🧵 @mrjamesob.bsky.social @lbc.co.uk

Of course. He can’t win on the economy. The house he inherited has been trashed beyond repair, so he’s offering to build a new one next door. His opponents are either invested in what wrecked the old house or are exploiting the damage. He’s simply moved the game elsewhere (imo) #r4today

Before AI deepfakes, I distinctly remember Michael Gove’s daughter posting a TikTok of him asleep on the sofa while she mimed vomiting at the camera. Her old TikToks did exist and were later wiped. If only someone had saved that one. #r4today

Andy Burnham has done in 10 weeks what Keir Starmer failed to do in two years: use a huge majority to push a bold agenda aimed at reconnecting with large parts of the electorate. Naturally, the right will attack it, but what’s the point of a massive majority if you’re afraid to use it? #r4today

Gove’s cynical and performative media rehabilitation strategy is vomit inducing. It’s a pity that #r4today don’t remind him of his Ian Hislop ‘HIGNFY’ roasting.

I agree. Clever voter psychology too: it flips 2016 on its head. Rejoining becomes the new “sunlit uplands”, while staying out becomes the supposedly rational choice that’s increasingly hard to justify emotionally after the shit show of the last decade.

In fairness my white car may have looked like a silver car under sodium lighting. Easy mistake to make - especially when you’re armed and hyped. Clearly I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. See, after all those years I’m still gas lit…

Fair point. I’m not analytical and conjoint analysis sounds a more robust way of testing a hypothesis. The Tories courted pensioners with the triple lock. I suspect the reverse calculation is being made: engage a younger demographic to swing elections but first you have to engage them. #r4today

I suspect it’s focus groups suggesting we do away with the triple lock. Knowing a few in that likely consulted demographic, I suspect they don’t think contributing to a personal pension is worth it either. That’s the paradox of populism: unintended consequences. Careful what you vote for. #r4today

I once innocently blew a police armed-robbery surveillance because my car matched the reported getaway car make (not the colour). The scramble to CYA was rather impressive & initially I got blamed. That was a local & costly op. Fairford may have cost more. Now watch the blame find someone. #r4today

The Chagos deal: negotiated largely by Mr Sunak’s Conservative government which conducted 11 rounds of negotiations versus Labour’s two before the October 2024 political agreement. Mauritius would obtain sovereignty while the UK retained control to operate Diego Garcia for 99 years. #r4today

I remember growing up in the 60s/70s, there were many classmates who today would be ADHD diagnosed. Back then the poor kids were just naughty or disruptive and moved to the back of the class whereas the middle class kids were ‘dyslexic’, wore special eyewear and moved up to the front #r4today

I haven’t verified whether this is AI, but if genuine, seeing disabled men and elderly women physically attacking someone for holding opposing views is deeply concerning. History (1930s Germany) reminds us how quickly intolerance of opposing views can become normalised by ordinary citizens. #r4today

I listened to Farage’s speech live yesterday. Mostly laughable hot air until the “first 100 days”. Then came an ominously familiar 1930s authoritarian playbook to weaken Parliament, purge the Civil Service, neuter the judiciary, then use a plebiscite to legitimise the new order. #r4today

Half of Reform left the Tories because they were tired of being associated with a bunch of serially corrupt incompetents. The other half were kicked out because they WERE the serially corrupt incompetents. It's like watching a snake eat itself.

Reform UK Ltd tying itself in knots over impermissible donations and the imaginative stories surrounding them. Luckily, Head of Policy Dr James Orr has a doctorate in Theology and Religion. When your defence requires faith and parables it pays to have a theologian on staff. #r4today

My take. Populist stuff with a human face. The electorate seem to respond to populism and Burnham is scoping what rings the centre left bell. The antithesis of Reform. Starmer managed behind the scenes with no populist messaging. Unlike Reform I trust Burnham will do some good behind the populism

Nightingale hospitals were a headline and nothing more than an expensive PR stunt. Any health authority that proposed sending a patient to one would have had to provide the staff to escort the patient there and the nursing staff to care for them during their admission. In lockdown! Imagine that…
