Of course not! I like my duckies too much for that.

And this was for uni students, to be clear.

The visual cues and physical engagement seemed to work. Once you are out of ducks, you can’t talk again until everyone is out of ducks. If you’re the last one with ducks and you still have 3, it’s soliloquy time. Usually only had to do this a few times to train the students.

This is for the contribution (not reading) side. In seminars, I gave all students 3 small rubber ducks. You had to use all your ducks by end of class by contributing to discussion. You then throw the duck at me. If the contribution is just “I agree with Joe” I throw the duck back.

My job involves important decisions, but I make the tough calls. I am leaving in the index, as the final entry, this gem: Zoom: unmuting for farts. #IndexSky

I’m so sorry for your loss. This is LeClerc. He gave the best biscuits. He was also a c*ck-blocker toward my husband in bed. Very possessive little furball. He was not a clever cat (not at all the grey eminence he was named after), but he was my little boy and I miss him dearly.
Grey and white adult cat, domestic short hair, draped over the left shoulder of a person whose back is to the camera.

Title Wave in Roseville, Minnesota. I remember it as dark, carpeted, and magical. I can still recall where various genres were on the floor: against the wall, rack in the middle back, etc. I loved going and browsing the films on offer.

Anyone have any indexing horror stories they care to share please for a presentation I’m doing soon? Like what can happen between index submission and what actually got printed in the book. I do have some examples of my own, which still make me shudder. 😱 #IndexSky

I think Pencil is convinced his brother, the cat who went walk-about, has been replaced by a changeling. Hisses, no grooming for the prodigal cat. That or it’s his way of saying “you stink; come back after you take a bath.”

He’s back! He was meowing at the window this morning after a major rainstorm. Three days of 100% guilt and anxiety now over. He’s none the worse for wear, just stinky. I think the rain made him rethink the joys of the outdoors. Here’s a picture of him curled up with another traveller.
Mackerel tabby cat, Chalk, curled up asleep beside a stuffie of Padington Bear. Both on a blue-grey poang chair.

Depends on the word count. Very roughly, just the embedded index for a 100,000 word ttrpg text would be $1000 CAD.

I don’t use ID’s tool. I use Index-Manager to index embedded texts. Never done typesetting work, so I’m not advocating ID, just relaying what I know.

I don’t know ebook creation software, so can’t say what they use. I know people who have used InDesign to typeset their books before generating the ebook, and had an embedded index created through InDesign.

Embedded indexing is the way to go for this. With an embedded index you can generate links from the index to the code-tagged text.

Academic authors: don't let your book index be your villain origin story; hire a professional indexer. We're worth the cost and you deserve the saved sanity. (I gripe, but I do also enjoy this sort of question.)

Maybe, but there’s some usability evidence that reading a lot of italics is a strain for some readers. Maybe just a differenct, distinct font?

— Example story, I said. I asked this question on Bluesky, hoping that smart fiction editors had some thoughts on it. "This makes my head hurt,” said Jane Doe. "I agree, Jane,” I said. — It was indeed a puzzling situation. Both options looked weird. — Grandpa, what happened next? Jonny said.

Haven’t dealt with this, but what if you used a mix of anglophone and nonanglophone styles? So quotation marks for, let’s say, interior-story dialogue and leading em dashes for the frame story’s?

This infuriates me in a way that I cannot explain. The problem of the disappearing native informants is bad enough in western scholarship without AI allowing the eliding of that labor in this way. Brill should be ashamed for publishing this.

Cautionary tale my PhD advisor told: People kept citing a particular manuscript from an archive. One day, prof is in archive and calls it up. It doesn’t exist. Never did. One guy made it up and for years everyone else cited his fake manuscript as a real thing in support of their own arguments.
