A light projection of the words "Free DC for all" with the DC flag illuminate the side of a building on the far side of the intersection.

I suspect that fact that the vast majority of LLM users don’t seem to have received this (really very simple!) message is because the AI companies have a vested interest in us not understanding it. “ChatGPT is smart, it just makes mistakes sometimes” is much more marketable than the truth.

Great @indexerscanada.bsky.social session by Elizabeth Bartmess on AI and LLM attempts to index full-length books (with HT @tanyaizzard.bsky.social). Plus how to respond as societies and individual indexers (the ‘context artists’). ‘LLMs are not indexing a book. They are autocompleting an index.’
Elizabeth Bartmess presenting on AI at Indexing Society of Canada ISC/SCI 2025 conference with a slide with following text.

LLMs’ nature
• LLMs are predictive text generators
• ‘Spicy autocomplete’
• They are not Indexing a book, they are autocompleting an index
– they are predicting
– based on statistical frequency of words in their corpus,
– what a response to your prompt would likely look like
– they are not going through the book and gathering all the bits of indexable material
• They generate text, then generate more text, linearly
• They cannot edit previously produced text
• It's not surprising they don't produce good indexes. It’s not what they’re designed forl

From Barbara Pym’s No Fond Return of Love: ‘but a book can be made or marred by its index. And love and devotion are not necessarily the best qualifications, she thought, remembering the wives and others who undertook what was often acknowledged to be a thankless task.’ Happy Valentine’s Day! ♥️
A paperback front cover of the novel No Fond Return of Love by Barbara Pym. It shows an illustration of a brunette woman in blue dress and heels looking through a tall bookcase at a studious man reading a book.
The cover quote is:
‘One of her very best – comic, heartrending, brave; in short, like life itself’
Shirley HazzardExtract from No Fond Return of Love by Barbara Pym.
People always look on indexers as unintelligent drudges, thought Dulcie a little indignantly, as she smiled faintly at an old joke he had just trotted out; but a book can be made or marred by its index. And love and devotion are not necessarily the best qualifications, she thought, remembering the wives and others who undertook what was often acknowledged to be a thankless task.

Text screenshot from baindex.org blog, with a festive snowy border with a red star sticker.

V

value of indexes: Have you ever tried to use a non-fiction book with a bad index? Or one with no index at all? The horror...

vocabulary: The index will largely follow the vocabulary of the main text, but the indexer will also consider extra access points and synonyms which might not be mentioned in the book at all. For example, if the index has a 'food' section, the indexer may add cross-references from headings such as diet, nutrition, etc.. A book which discusses swear words or such content should also have that reflected in its index, which can make for some interesting entries.

An #Indexmas advent calendar A to Z. Suggest your own and see also @indexers.bsky.social and #IndexSky. ☃️ Day 21. U is for… undifferentiated locators updates user needs
Text screenshot from baindex.org blog, with a red festive border with gold stars and a sticker of a red and white Santa hat.

U

undifferentiated locators: A long list of too many locators (or page numbers) with no breakdown into subentries is generally not helpful to the reader. (see also locator strings)

updates: When publishing a second or further edition of a book, it can be quicker and easier for the original indexer to update their index rather than ask a new indexer to do this, or to re-index the entire book, depending on how much material has changed. Good indexing is much more than a case of 'just adding page numbers' to a supplied list of words though. The results of this may be neither pretty nor of much use.

user needs: A good book indexer should consider the needs of the user (reader) – who are they, when will they be using the index, and what will they need to look up? (see also readers)
