5 years in the making; glad to have this one over with. Where we show that sure, you can use advanced #NeuralNetwork and #DeepLearning if you feel like it, but basic linear regression does the job as well, faster, and does not burn the planet. #AI agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

New study led by @marylouathanase.bsky.social and @raphaelkoehler.bsky.social. As #SeaIce thins, the Beaufort Gyre releases its feshwater out of the #Arctic. We don't predict the "Day After Tomorrow" but I'm curious about potential impacts on the #AMOC agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Our new study is out: The Arctic Beaufort Gyre is projected to weaken or vanish in most CMIP6 models under future climate change. The gyre would thus stop storing freshwater in its centre, with possibly large impacts on the Arctic and beyond. Read: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

The future Barents Sea—A synthesis of physical, biogeochemical, and ecological changes toward 2050 and 2100
The Barents Sea is a hotspot for ongoing Arctic climate change, manifested in a rapid warming of the ocean and the atmosphere and a strong decline of the winter sea-ice cover. These changes in the phy...

Drivers of high frequency extreme sea level around Northern Europe – Synergies between recurrent neural networks and Random Forest
Abstract. Northern Europe is particularly vulnerable to extreme sea level events as most of its large population, financial and logistics centres are located by the coastline. Policy makers need infor...

Has the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) weakened over the last decades? In our new study, we combine state-of-the-art CMIP6 models and observation-based estimates of the air-sea heat flux in the North Atlantic to show that the AMOC has not declined since the 1960s! 🌊

Atlantic overturning inferred from air-sea heat fluxes indicates no decline since the 1960s - Nature Communications
The AMOC is crucial for the global ocean overturning circulation and controls the climate around the North Atlantic. Here, the authors use 24 Earth System Models from the CMIP6 to demonstrate tha...

Contrasting two major Arctic coastal polynyas: the role of sea ice in driving diel vertical migrations of zooplankton in the Laptev and Beaufort seas
Abstract. The diel vertical migration (DVM) of zooplankton is one of the largest species migrations to occur globally and is a key driver of regional ecosystems and the marine carbon pump. Previously ...

Officially, it's still 24h darkness here. In practice, it is quite bright for 2-3h, similar to summer in Europe when you look to the west at sunrise, especially on a clear day like today. #Arctic #MiddayNight
