"If the media—journalists, filmmakers, and the like—could correctly inform the public about the risks of climate change, the film (and its accompanying calls to action) posited, we would begin to see progress on cutting emissions." Ergo, film, art etc etc are not capable of driving climate action

We need more philosophical explorations of our climate plight. To step back, to open and honestly explore if liberal democracies can stop climate change and if not, then what exactly? Stick with liberal democracy until the end, til our end? That's the way it's looking. Better dead than green etc

Our new paper is part of an effort to problematise the simplistic and paternalistic assumptions around the impact of and solutions to climate misinformation. There is demand, as well as supply. Open access ijoc.org/index.php/ij...

Hundreds of thousands march in French public sector strike against austerity and war
Workers and youth spoke to the WSWS at yesterday’s march in Paris of their growing anger and concern over economic hardship, war, and the fear of far-right dictatorship

I guess what's new about the AI situation is that previously new technologies and conveniences were welcome with open arms and celebrated, with the negatives only appearing a few years down the line. With AI, it's been, 'woah, WTF is this, stop it now' pretty much from the off

I don't know. I got in to climate change not to save the planet but to bring down the liberal capitalist system. Climate change was just the symptom. Now 30 years later it is clear I was right to say is about more than carbon. We now can choose to die from climate, WWIII and/or AI.

To be fair, the government does not know how to respond. They are frightened of this movement, the anger that lies underneath, and the threat it poses to their political project.

who writes the worst impacts are now unavoidable? What even are the 'worst impacts'? That's extinction, surely? Nothing is worse than that. So are people now writing that human extinction is now unavoidable?

What has happened to people? Here in the UK, the government is spending the public's money agitating for a war of choice that will not just cost money but also untold lives. And the people are silent, seemingly happy with the situation (inc. the centre left). I guess the propaganda has improved.

Death/number of deaths/likely number of deaths. These are not the motivating symbols campaigners think they are.

People rightly see data centres as a threat. Workers have learnt to be suspicious and defensive. Shame no politicians are willing to stand with the people.

Why do you believe the next one was going to be different? That's what I don't get amongst the climate movement, the unending faith in liberalism to provide a meaningful response to climate change, and to imagine the failings are those of a particular leader, rather than the system.

of climate all my life, but from the perspective of a more socialist world view, so I have swum in both oceans as it were. Though I recognise my attachment to an eco-socialist response is driven by my own antecedent understanding of/wishes for the world.

1/2 I think you are correct. I mean I have tried sort of penetrating the frames liberal climate campaigners use and I just hit a brick wall, glazed eyes. I think - oh, am I the same, unable to escape my own worldview but I don't think that is so. I have been exposed to liberal constructions

Doesn't look like it. it's been around that level in survey's for a couple of years at least. I think the '87% concerned' trope needs some unpacking - campaigners are banking everything on it but I don't think it is all that.

Christopher Shaw @climatechr1s.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Climate communication is simply the art of convincing people everything is going to be OK - business, the state and the people will unite to manage humanity through to a safe net zero future via a just transition from fossil fuels to electricity.

Under net zero this only gets worse, atmospheric concentrations of CO2 increasing until net zero reached, and then we stay at the edge of the precipice for hundreds of years. That's the best case scenario and assumes we reach net zero and projections of post net zero temps are correct

I don't know about climate concern rising beyond the 87% who currently say they are concerned, certainly not amongst the 'working class' - I don't know what mechanism would bring that about. Not fear, not 'messaging', not community organising. It has all been tried

Also, the tragedy this doesn't confront is toddlers, babes, kids having to compete for their parent's attention with their parent's phone, a contest the kid invariably loses, from what I can see.

This piece is good on AI, and especially the point about work disappearing from national statistics. Self service checkouts didn't reduce the amount of work, they just transferred it to unpaid customers. www.ft.com/content/47f4...

Liberal climate 'action' is primarily designed - I believe anyway - to legitimise liberalism in the face of a crisis for which liberalism actually has no answers.

Yes. I cannot help but feel this was always the net zero end game. Offer a 'solution' to deal with liberal angst about climate change, and once the political and economic cost of implementing the policies became unacceptable to capital the pretence would be over.

Agreed with @rupertread.bsky.social article and your comments. At the moment there is still a lot of work to do to connect extreme weather with climate change in the public mind. The Greens avoided leading on climate because that connection just isn't there yet.

Peak oil was a concept used to slow action on climate change - 'we don't need to reduce use of fossil fuels because we are about to run out anyway, and that's a far bigger problem than climate change.'
