Them! (1954) Despite its unconvincing monster effects, this is no B picture. It’s an (otherwise) excellent horror/sci-fi expression of nuclear anxiety that delivers both drive-in thrills & resonant atomic-age chills, with a deep cast, led by Edmund Gwenn as the scientist who knows what it all means.

I'm sorry to see Yordan Alvarez & Pete Crow-Armstrong's seasons end, but otherwise the 3 Wild Card Series results thus far seem correct. The team w/ better record won all 3, & the team w/ more recent WS championship lost all 3. It's been 17 years since any of 4 AL teams remaining won a World Series.

The Red Sox neither put multiple runners on base nor advanced a runner who was on base at any point in this Wild Card Series.

Bases-empty, two-outs, non-injury pitching change up seven runs in the 8th should be illegal.

Backrooms (2026) Despite impressive casting, Danny Vermette's set design is the star of this horror hit that manifests the unconscious as a series of yellowed, mostly unfurnished, increasingly surreal spaces. Something less than a complete statement, perhaps b/c it's part of an ongoing web series.

Yeah, I prefer to spend my time on films, both because I prefer the artform, and it's more time-efficient (e.g.: Godfather I + Godfather II + Goodfellas + Casino + The Irishman = 15 hr 10 min; The Sopranos = ~80 hours). bsky.app/profile/clif...

Stop! That! Train! (2026) This RuPaul-produced disaster-movie parody set on a glammed-out bullet train is amusing, good-natured, well-cast (primarily with Drag Race all-stars and cameos), and well structured, but not as funny, smart, or outrageous as it could or should be. Contains some AI effects.

The WPBL Championship Series is going to a winner-take-all Game 5 on Tuesday night, which is what this league deserved. Here's my recap of the Firebells' record-setting Game 4 win, with details on each team's pitching budget for Game 5, the Queens' need for today's day off, and much more:

I know nothing about basketball, but I love the Clifford pick discussion, and when the one guy said "slashing, crafty two-guard," I was like, "oh, he's picking Snoopy." This is very well done.

They’re so sharp. Though I prefer them with the white pants. I think the Queens’ and Firebells’ alternate jerseys are their best, while the Heights’ and Hunters’ alternate jerseys are their worst.

Ooh, how about "adversity" (specifically in a sports context).

Cliff Corcoran @cliffcorcoran.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Maybe not least favorite, but I really try not to use "historic," because its multiple definitions render it meaningless. (My having said that means that, if you made minimal effort, you could probably find it in something I wrote like a week ago.)

Of course the only way the Queens were going to beat the Heights was in their last at-bat in the highest-scoring game in WPBL history. My recap includes notes on Samaria Benítez and Jacqui Reynolds, the disastrous broadcast, the Heights wearing gray pants at home & parting thoughts from Val Perez:

My speculation is based only on decades of seeing this injury happen. She made no contact with anyone else and just crumpled. She is being carted off the field. Hondras to 2B, Maggie Foxx to RF.

Cliff Corcoran @cliffcorcoran.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
The ESPN broadcast is being rather casual about it (it has been a disaster tonight, continually dropping out), but it looks like Samaria Benítez may have blown out her ACL on the turtleback slope at Robin Roberts Stadium. That's speculation, but she appears to be in a great deal of pain.
