The Treaty of Greenville was signed on #ThisDayinHistory 231 years ago, bringing an end to the Northwest Indian War and forcing the exchange of money and goods for Northwest Territory land. The territory ceded by Native Americans in the Treaty is identified on this map by dotted lines.

PhD student Aidan Cosgrove loved our exhibit "Up, Up, and Away: A History of Ballooning" so much that he brought our balloon back to the Narayan Lab! 🎈 He complimented the quality of the balloons and their capacity to hold the gases he works with in his research. 🥼 @umlifesciences.bsky.social

This exhibit examines the history of balloon flight in the United States from Blanchard’s first ascension to the early twentieth century.

Ballooning, as dangerous as it was, became a crowd pleaser following the Civil War. Many daring aeronauts accepted the risk and offered performances at fairs across the country. Performers offered acts varying from trapeze performances to concurrent parachute jumps by man, woman, and even dog!
“King of the Clouds” Prof J.F. Thomison would go up in a hot air balloon 3 times for $100, twice with his dog and once “hanging by the teeth.” E. Ashlock and Madam Townsend’s custom stationery boasts that they use the largest balloons, highlights their ascensions by lady or gent, and depicts a dog in a parachute. Two manuscript letters on printed stationery advertising hot air balloon stunt shows.

On Wednesday, 7/8 at 6 pm, communities across the country will read the Declaration of Independence aloud — marking the exact date of its 1st public reading in 1776. Americans in all 50 States and 16 Territories of the U.S. will read the Declaration as part of "Sharing the Spirit of America."

Last night, on the 250th anniversary of the drafted Declaration of Independence being presented to the Continental Congress, community members performed the final draft of the Declaration live for attendees of the Ann Arbor Summer Festival.

Just over 100 years ago, the Clements Library hosted Professor Verner W. Crane of Brown University to teach a “Seminar in American History” over the summer semester. This marked the first time a summer class was taught in the library! ☀️
