One way sighted people can determine what to put in alt text: Imagine you sent the post or article to a friend, and the image didn't load. What would someone need to know to get the equivalent experience and context? This will help you identify the important details.

I think I've turned into that person who posts mostly cat pictures. Take me or leave me, they give me joy. Here's Stanci preparing for an afternoon nap. #rescue #CatsOfBluesky

When I got up this morning, I noticed Stanci wasn't in any of her usual places. I looked everywhere and just by chance noticed her head poking out of the duffle bag of clean laundry I transported from the laundromat but hadn't put away. #HouseWorkIsNotMyPriority #CatsOfBluesky

Hyperlink text should make sense when read out of context. Screen reader users can navigate from link to link, and can listen to links in a list. When navigating this way, only the link is read. So "click here" or "read more" won't make sense.

🧵 1/3 Had another excellent musical meet-up, this time inside, where there's AC (it was 36° with the humidex in the barn, where we usually play in the summer months). One of our newer members brought us some absolute bangers: "Walls" by Tom Petty and "Shame on the Moon" by Rodney Crowell.

When I was a teen, one of my favourite artists was #TollerCranston. This is one of my paintings from those days, and you can definitely tell who influenced me! I still love Toller's art. #MyArt #Art

When you can, avoid number-only date formats. Sighted users could be confused on whether the first number is the month or day. If you've incorrectly designated your document's language, screen reader users might hear the wrong date. Writing out the month prevents this confusion.

Avoid character complexity in fonts. Simpler shapes and patterns of typographical text are more quickly and accurately analyzed by the human mind. Be careful with complex fonts, especially for long sections of text.
