Goram and Vincent is one of my favourite local myths. As a folklorist, I love how many stories we have in the southwest and am proud to see Temple Meads celebrating them.

I had a great time this morning exploring @rammuseum.bsky.social. Especially nice, from my point of view, was seeing how great the museum guides and staff were with the school groups who were in. Love to see museums engaging with the community and spreading the love of history.

A very good morning from Exeter. It's my first full day down here to explore what Roman remains the city has to offer and think about how we can make the most of the history around us, for schools in Exeter and across the UK alike.

Very excited for this @classicsforall.bsky.social CPD about running trips. With both my teacher and network co-ordinator hat on, I know how difficult it can be to run trips and can't wait to get some tips to make them even better.

This is the sort of thing a cashless society robs us of, the opportunity to try to get away with paying the bus fare in Carthaginian currency www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
bbc.co.uk
Coin used as Leeds bus fare was 2,000‑year‑old currency
The coin was handed down to Peter Edwards from his grandfather in the 1950s.

What kind of classical reception fanatic would I be without mentioning @nataliehaynes.bsky.social? In a disclipline that is saturated with Medusa analysis, 'Stone Blind' manages to weave together both the monsterous and the tragic to create the fullest figure of our favourite Gorgon.
The cover of 'Stone Blind' by Natalie Hayes. A dark blue background, with Medusa's head as a gold line drawing and the book's title and author's name in a contrasting light blue.

I first discovered @jeansthoughts.bsky.social on YouTube and really admire her as the academic I want to be - classicist, author and all around good person. 'All The Violet Tiaras' is a lovely work on how LGBTQ+ writers are retelling myth while layering in the complexity of ancient sexuality.
The cover of 'All The Violet Tiaras' by Jean Menzies. A pale beige background with a white line drawing of a bust. The bust is crowned with a tiara of purple flowers.

The classics extend beyond Greece and Rome, so next we have 'Oh Maya Gods!' by @mazevansauthor.bsky.social. I learned about the Aztecs and the Mayans at school before the Greeks and Romans, so their myths will always be nostalgic, and Maz brings them to life in a hilarious retelling for all ages.

One for the #manga fans. テルマエ・ロマエ is a time travel story about a Roman architect who finds himself able to travel to modern Japan. There, he discovers bath houses and runs with the idea. It's a consideration of how two seemingly disparate cultures can have the same idea.

On the 7th day of Lunar New Year, Renri (人日) (the “Birthday of All Humans”) is celebrated. According to Chinese tradition, it’s the day when Nüwa, the goddess of creation, made the first humans. Everyone’s birthday is honoured, symbolising unity and new beginnings. A good myth to share in class.

Today marks the start of the new year in China and is often linked to family life. Like many Roman women, who traditionally moved into their husband’s household after marriage, Chinese women also joined their husband’s family, symbolising a fresh start and new responsibilities.

Today is Lunar New Year's Eve, and with it a reminder that classics will always focus on Ancient Greece and Rome, but they aren't the only ancient (classical) civilisations worth exploring with classes. Looking at similarities between Rome and China, for example, opens the door to shared humanity.

Reading The Mercian Chronicles is giving a classic example of The Tiffany Problem - something that seems out of place in history because it’s so “modern“ (but is, in fact, ancient). I’m reading a lot about Bishop Chad, and can only think of medieval memes.

February's book: The Mercian Chronicles: King Offa and the Birth of the Anglo-Saxon State, AD 630–918 by Max Adams We teach about Roman Britain, but late antique Britain hardly ever comes up in classics, so I'm excited to explore this book and see what links we can make. First thoughts on Friday.

A good book is a real joy. If we can claim it as CPD, that's all the better. To that end, I'm launching 'Ad Fontes' - an asynchronous bookclub here on Bluesky. Each month, I'll share a book I'm reading and then post weekly reflections on the knowledge as I work through. First book details incoming!
