I'm not finished yet, but I had to share how fantastic the opening to @wescraigcomics.bsky.social's Superman The Stranger is. Clark talks about his burgeoning powers, all the while being a down on his luck, relatable, normal man despite them. It's so amazing. It sets a tone impeccably.

Operation Iron Coffin by @kennyporter.bsky.social and @tcannoncomics.bsky.social sadly wraps up with #3, but what is they say about leaving them wanting more? This was an excellent and BONKERS short series that had so many different elements, but somehow made them all work. So impressive!

It takes a long time to get to the crux of the movie, and once we're there,it's over pretty fast. I didn't like this one so much, it was a less novel premise than Them, and feels silly because it can't leave the water. They wind up just blowing it up because it does a tiny bit of damage to a bridge.

There's a slight thread of plot about nobody taking the female scientist seriously, and I can't tell if it's trying to say "Look at all these men, not listening just because she's a woman," or it it's saying "Nobody needs to listen to her because she's a woman."

Black Tower: The Raven Conspiracy#2 solidifies it as a kind of gritty crime/gang story, but with huge scoop of urban fantasy - So we've got a killer, stealing objects and information for their handler, but he's doing it in their dreams. So cool. Art dripping with mood and atmosphere too.

Corpse Knight#6 gives the series an unexpectedly sweet, poignant ending and retroactively makes the story a zombie story that's unlike any other I've ever read. The art and colors in this have been excellent start to finish too, this one's a lovely, maggoty, gross little gem.

There's a feeling I really love that only comics give me, when an issue ends and I have NO idea whatsoever what'll come next. T.V. shows don't do that, you always know, at least vaguely, what KIND of thing might happen next, where the story or characters might go. The general tone.

The pace actually made me think of a fast-paced stage play, it seems like that would work well. There's a great ending to the first issue, it develops the father's (Awful...) character and leaves you wondering where the story is going - Which I love in comics, when I can't even guess!

Actually, I think it was said that movies around the time needed romance in them, so it's not specific to monster movies. Radioactivity and a scene involving a large map are very often involved too. "What if familiar nature, but big?" is a common theme too, but one I find interesting.

It Came From Beneath The Sea (1955) For a movie opening taking place in a submarine, this one is extremely dry, a lot of basically nothing happens for a long stretch. When things do start actually moving, it's a romance subplot, which is becoming a hallmark of the giant monster genre at this point.

My partner, who I love so dearly, but who refuses to TOUCH a comic book, suggested we watch Hellrasier 2 when I showed him this. WHAT A BIZARRE MOVIE. Total nonsense, it's basically just "Vibes," but the budget was cut in production so the vibes aren't very effective. Crazy they even got a 3rd.

The Amazon write up for this does it extremely dirty. I almost wanted to tag the writer, but I hesitated in case they wrote it themselves. "It's Dracula meets BERSERK in this dark fantasy series full of sexy entities and betrayal." That's a very... Sensationalist, reductive and...Basic description.

Regicide #1 and 2 were great! A farmer joins a strange warrior on a quest to vanquish a cruel ruler. Sounds like a simple story, but everything about it is a touch strange, the art and the writing have a wonderful, ineffable, odd quality that makes it compelling. Awesome if you want some "Strange."

Josh Johnson is an excellent comedian who puts out a topical weekly stand up special... ONCE A WEEK. To an audience of 2.62 million. If he put one together about how to get into comics, to help all those people on the outside and overwhelmed by the prospect, I can't imagine the impact it could have.

I often start recording and somewhere in the middle say "This edit is going to suck." Burps, coughs, mic buzz, stuttering, stammering repeatedly... But, to be less negative, I'm finding my own style of reading my notes more and more. I just need to FUCKING SLOW DOWN so I can stop stumbling so often.
