This loss hurts. Sam Neill was a tremendous actor and, by all measures, a terrific human being, warm & caring & charming & funny. So many of my colleagues were inspired by his performance in Jurassic Park; I first watched him ten years earlier in the British series Reilly: Ace of Spies. RIP. 😔

This skull, shown here being excavated in 2025, is one of many horse fossils that will be displayed during the public PaleoCon event on Saturday, 8/22. Horses were the most abundant large mammals in the region during this time, & remained so until bison showed up after ~190 ka. 🐎🧪 #FossilFriday

For #FossilFriday: a skull of the extinct horse Equus scotti under study in the collections at the Western Science Center in Hemet, California, US. The fossil was recently recovered from Pleistocene sediments (~ 500 ka) in Murrieta, CA, US, & will be showcased at the WSC's annual PaleoCon event. 🐎🧪

More on the Repenning murder for those interested. To be clear, it wasn't just fossils that the burglars stole - they seemed to be grabbing anything & everything that *might* have value indiscriminately. So, Cary's point still stands - one of these days, somebody will be killed over fossil sales.

Solid article. And Cary @doublebeam.bsky.social likely isn't wrong in his prediction. (In fact, it has already happened, just not over a dinosaur; paleontologist Charles Repenning was murdered in his home in January 2005 by burglars looking to steal fossils among other things.)

Counterpoint: I've known several postdocs who literally WERE "burger-flippers." Their programs paid them so poorly that they had to work fast food jobs just to survive. THAT'S WHY THEY NEED TO UNIONIZE
