I hope that at some point in your life, you experience music in a way that you lose yourself in completely, that makes the rest of the world disappear. If only for as long as the song.

In the fall of my first year of college, I saw my two favorite bands play live for the first time — R.E.M. on the Document tour followed by U2 on The Joshua Tree tour. On consecutive nights. I don’t think I could have understood at that time just how gobsmackingly, impossibly unlikely that was.

There are many things about the realities and challenges that high schoolers have to navigate today that I’m forever grateful to have avoided through the sheer good fortune of being born in different times. Specifically, promposals.

Is local media not picking up on this story--with the MPD documents right there in it--because it would poke holes in their own coverage of the Jan. 9th "clearing" operation? Or is it bc of their institutional relationships with MPD? Something else? I have some thoughts on this this below:

As a rule, I don’t often think about economists. But I do think about this 1963 quote from economist John Kenneth Galbraith quite a lot: “The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.”

“Write conversationally” is a useful maxim, especially after figuring out that “conversationally” means “Not the way *you* talk, Charles.”

Grateful for all of the things I’ve learned through the experience of being wrong, of making mistakes. Really wish my brain would cling with barnacle-like tenacity to the former and not the latter, but here we are.

Being a writer involves learning about a large number and broad range of very specific things that give the decidedly false impression that I know a whole lot more about said things than I actually do.

In a culture that regularly equates wealth with virtue, it seems significant that artists are consistently expected to act with conscience — and excoriated for their failures to do so — to a degree that more powerful people with more leverage to make meaningful change are not.

It’s easier and more socially acceptable to be nice than it is to be honest. And like a lot of folks, I was raised to believe that the former was “polite.” In truth, it just made me and a lot of other people in my life miserable. The latter is a lot harder to do, but also a lot easier to live with.

I’m beginning to wonder if my misanthropy is simply blossoming into full flower with age, or if it’s just finally in emotional soil that allows it to flourish as it was always meant to. A bit of both, perhaps.

I try to pay just enough attention to men’s apparel trends to have a sense of just how far out of style I am. But it seems like it’s in to wear shirts as if your torso doesn’t exist, which is not really an option for me.

As a reader, I no longer have the patience to slog my way through the sort of obtuse, clever, contrived language that I used to think was the hallmark of great writing. And I think that’s helping me become a better writer. I want to write what I’d find interesting enough to keep reading.

Enjoying a bourbon rocks after futzing with various bicycles in the garage while listening to the Allman Brothers Band’s “At Fillmore East,” and given when and where I grew up (70-80s, St. Louis), there’s a good chance I saw somebody doing that when I was a kid and thought “That guy’s got it made.”

A couple years back, I listened to the audiobook of Robert Caro’s biography of Robert Moses, “The Power Broker.” Which has proven sadly useful in reckoning with the President’s wanton, reckless, shameless disregard for laws and court orders regarding the appropriation of public lands and buildings.

I started playing bass when I was in my early teens, and I used to divide music I’d hear into two categories: Music that makes me want to practice, and music that makes me want to quit. The latter being music that felt so technically advanced or complex that I felt like I’d never be able to play it.
