And generally having a great time gallivanting around Berlin, which had more spies per capita than anywhere else in the world. But second was Vienna which is very close to the Slovak border

I'd assume something in the combination of Czechoslovakia turned especially hardline after 1968 and that border nations often had the more advanced spying networks in the Warsaw Pact

Wow, this Keir chap is quite the political operator. Forensic, cunning, setting heffalump traps his opponents can’t help walking into. The party should find him a seat. Reckon he might be leadership material.

When Stalin's son tried to commit suicide by shooting himself in the head but survived Stalin's first words to him were "Hah! You missed!" Maybe not the nicest bloke

Yeah, if nothing else, changing your mind would just completely collapse your sense of self. Like what was it all for. Even Trotsky didn't argue against the revolution, just that its cause has been perverted

To some extent I'd call Zinoviev and Kamenev the original core of Stalin's centrist faction, though they eventually tried to jump ship to the opposition when it became obvious that their turn was coming

This analysis of homes on sale on RightMove last year suggested 8% in the NE, 13% in Y&H and 15% in the NW. Admittedly, a few asterisks to put on that like "listing price is not sales price" todaysconveyancer.co.uk/steep-north-...

His success as a businessman has always really been in branding first and foremost too (well and being a con artist). A lot of buildings with his name on he doesn't actually own, he's just licencing the name. A lot of his other businesses are basically just reliant on his image too.

Don't think it's a coincidence that he tweeted this earlier. He's clearly worried that AI is underperforming and that's affecting the economy but thinks that the issue is poor branding.

Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 10h
Yes. He was also quite vain and hey Stalin had made him foreign minister and Khrushchev had sent him flying down the ranks. Do think Molotov may have been under the delusion that Stalin would eventually see sense too RE his wife. Or that Beria, who he hated, was actually responsible
060
Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 10h
Stalin's daughter basically characterised him as one of life's yes men. Said he was as subservient to his wife as Stalin
060
Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 11h
I think on some level both
060
Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 11h
It is also fair to say that the Bolsheviks were not the most mentally well adjusted group in the first place and the purges somewhat selected for those most willing to go along with things
071
Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 11h
Then he allied with Bukharin against Trotsky. Then when his position was strong enough he moved against Bukharin. Bukharin then allied with Trotsky but by then it was too late for both.
080
Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 11h
Another thing was just how systematic Stalin was. The post Lenin Bolsheviks divided into three main factions, a left bloc around Trotsky, a right bloc around Bukharin and a centrist bloc around Stalin. Stalin chose to position in the centre on purpose, realising it was the strongest position
2110
Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 11h
Yeah, though human beings are also very good at coming to terms with horrendous shit they did by telling themselves it was right, so I think it was probably that leading into self delusion too. Would you want to believe yourself to be a coward who sold out his wife
291
Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 11h
In fairness I think Bukharin probably knew exactly what Stalin was at this stage but was just trying one last hail Mary.
170
Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 11h
A lot of the remaining leaders wound up being a mix of intelligent but psychopathic (Beria) or vain and incredibly thick, of which Molotov was the latter. Also something of a self protection element too. Objecting to stuff was a very good way of being next

It's one reason why Starmer's gifts scandal was so damaging I think. Probably where he'd been strongest in opposition was condemning Boris's scandals so it just gave the impression he was a hypocrite

Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 12h
I think tbf again, he does probably get that on a certain level. He explicitly mentions play as something he wants to do with his child. But I think a lot of AI guys think books are dry things for knowledge acquisition and not much else
010
Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 13h
But if you frame books as just an inefficient data holding device, as a lot of AI guys do, this is where it takes you
120
Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 13h
I think in this case the guy does explicitly want to engage with his child, in fairness, but he is just thinking of a book as a way to teach vocalisation in this case, when it is so much more. My baby looks to play with the book, likes to interact with her while I read, and it encourages reading
200
Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 13h
Yeah, though that will quickly discover that that's not actually possible
010
Chris Terry-Enescu @cjterry.bsky.social · 14h
A continual thing that is evident from AI bros discourse is they don't like the concept of books

Even the PNL and USR do this to some extent. They're not wrong entirely to identify corruption as one issue, but obviously they slightly overstate both how easy that is to fix and probably how much can be recouped
