That’s not to say that individual measures to control inflation like this are always bad — in many respects it is like taking a painkiller. It can be a good idea to dose yourself up on painkillers if you have a looming deadline or a personal event you really don’t want to miss. It is a bad idea if the painkiller becomes an alternative to seeing a doctor or going to the hospital. The Reeves approach became a way for Labour to avoid talking about the underlying causes of pressures on living standards while doing comparatively little to ease them. If the John Healey approach is about providing a good introduction for Andy Burnham that’s one thing. If it becomes the repeated method that is quite another.

I was traveling yesterday, for a first fitting on a suit I’m having made (in cream Irish linen, from J Mueser in NYC). The shirt is a white OCBD from Drake’s. The shoes are dark brown penny loafers from Crockett & Jones.

Prof. OBrien's second point, on the emergence of a northern European alliance, bears watching. Two thoughts: a) For the UK such a defence arrangement helps cement tighter relations with "Europe" while being unhindered by Brexit shibboleths. b) Notably, France and Italy are not included.

This is a weird damn map, and indicative of what happens when FPTP elections are used in an environment with a minimum of five viable political parties: the whole thing devolves into a series of very localized two-party contests. Eventually something has to give and I suspect it will be FPTP.
