A marvellous album, and comfortably my favourite of the band's late era. "She Just Wants To Be", "I'll Take The Rain", "All The Way To Reno" and "Imitation of Life" are high on my list of favourite R.E.M. songs.

Fucking hell. Tim Curry and Dolly Parton gone in two days. There are only a very small handful of famous people I actual give a shit about, and the list is now two shorter. Think the last time I was genuinely this sad about the death of someone I didn't actually know personally, it was John Peel.

There have been a bunch of cases here in the UK with parking apps downloaded via QR codes stuck on faulty parking machines turning out to be credit card and private phone data harvesting tools. That sign looks dodgy AF.

It's Max Fucking Headroom!
A photo of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, a bald man, wearing a dark suit, with a white shirt, and dark red tie, in front of a background of diagonal black and yellow/gold lines, reminiscent of fictional 80's TV host Max Headroom.

My OH would probably say me! It's almost certainly an R.E.M. tour t-shirt from 2003, which is a little faded, but otherwise isn't in bad shape at all, especially considering it's age, and how often it's been worn.

I've found that in the majority of projects aiming to increase efficiency of pretty much every organisation I've been involved with, the solution rarely requires anything directly related to technology, but rather a review and update of procedures/processes, and communication.

This next year is going to be extremely testing financially. Cost of living continues to grow & interest rates are crazy high. In the next 6 months I'm going to have to somehow earn a *lot* more just to continue to barely stay above the waterline. Not sure what to do. Suggestions on a postcard!

This week we had to fork out nearly £500 for a second time for a new wheel, tyre, and the labour to fit them. Bloody potholes indeed.

Yeah, same here. If there was a nominal charge, say £1/$1, for the audiobook if you own the Kindle etc. version, that'd be fine, but I appreciate that it's often not the same publisher that does the eBook and audiobook, which I've always assumed is why this wasn't already a thing.

Yeah, the Doncaster Comma doesn't have the same ring to it, and sounds like a euphemism of some sort, rather than a use of punctuation. It'd almost certainly end up being referred to as the "Donny Comma", which is clearly someone's name, most likely a tanned 70's crooner or daytime TV presenter.

I always think it's such a shame when things like this are on mid-week, as it means so many people, like myself, who'd be interested in attended aren't able to make it. Will certainly try to get along when I next have a free weekend, or if I find myself over that way.

Picked up a CME WIDI Thru6 BT a while back to glue together all the synths in the "pissing around with sounds" corner of my studio, and it's just a dream. With only a minor amount of messing around configuring the studio Mac, they're all accessible wirelessly from t'other side of the room too!

Cool. I made my way to a gig of sorts last night for the first time in a little while. In my case it was Blur's drummer Dave Rowntree doing a book tour/talk/Q&A. Very enjoyable, funny, and he came across as a lovely guy.

Ah, the endless cycle of: 1. Do the thing yourself. 2. A third party can do it for me, which is so much less effort. Yay! 3. It's costing too much, and I miss the level of control I had. 4. Start doing it yourself again. 5. Remember the effort required, especially when it goes wrong. Back to 2.

I know I can search for and disable AI features individually, and stop the Copilot chat window appearing on start-up in settings, but an overarching option, which will automatically apply to new AI features as they're added, feels overdue. But I guess with free apps, we must take what we're given.

Chris Wilson @ciw1973.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
VS Code updates are all 95% AI features these days, and the AI related Extensions seem to update every other time I open it, despite them being disabled. I'm not necessarily against these features, but I feel we're long passed the point where a simple "Disable all AI features" option is required.

As a bonus, it was a freebie courtesy of the Morrison's More app, although it looked so good I did buy a second one, and am very glad I did; my cholesterol levels were probably still far too low after the salad I had for tea last week.

This is a Morrison's fresh cream trifle donut. It may look fairly unassuming in the picture, but in real life it's big, so much so that I could only eat half, and I'm renowned (in this household at least) for my pudding gluttony. It's also, by quite some way, the nicest donut I've ever eaten.
Large fresh cream, custard, and jam filled, sugar coated ring donut, from Morrison's supermarket, in a clear plastic container. Price marked as £2.

Last year, miHoYo copied my puzzle game Ouros in Zenless Zone Zero. Because they are a recognized, billion-dollar studio and my game isn't well known, some people are now assuming that their version is the original, and mine is the clone. I hope this video clears that up.

Loved the first two modern films, and thought the writing in particular was excellent, especially for the second (with Hugh Grant) but the third fell pretty flat in my book, so for now I'll hold off getting too excited about a potential fourth outing.

Our four year old and I both really enjoyed it. To me it felt very much like a good wholesome Agatha Christie novel in almost every way, and the fact that half of the cast were sheep made little difference in terms of the story; however the "sheep lore" stuff was quite deep and moving at times.

Another year where the BBC pick the UK's Eurovision entry, and another year where the next day they ask "why does the UK keep getting it wrong?" I've an idea - maybe don't send a shouty, loutish entry, which just serves to remind Europeans of what awful fucking people Brits can be when on holiday.

I bought an enormous ex-rental CRT a very similar size to that from a TV shop to use purely for gaming, probably 15 years ago now, and it was bloody marvellous. Think I paid £70. Often wish I still had it, although there's no way it'd have survived the several relocations we've had since.

The fact that it's a function just hints at an exposed implementation detail, which is what I thought when I first read about it. The phrase "value at referral" simply comes across as a good way to remember how it functions, rather than anything else, an approach which is commonly used in teaching.

Chris Wilson @ciw1973.bsky.social · 13/05/2026
They assume it stands for variable, because for as long as we've had programming languages, and well before that in maths, the word variable has commonly been shortened to "var". It doesn't matter what it actually means here; when "var" means variable everywhere else, that's how our brains read it.
