em @civetta.bsky.social · 21/10/2025Even shortly before we left the EU, students were often being actively discouraged from taking it up (would interrupt their studies, would be a distraction, they wouldn't have the linguistic capacity etc. etc.) 120
em @civetta.bsky.social · 21/10/2025The great tragedy of Erasmus in the UK was that, for instance, I would've loved to have done it but never knew anything about it. Then we complained that too many students came here & not enough of us took advantage of it. 120
em @civetta.bsky.social · 20/10/2025We're also going to have to put up with Glaswegians patronising Sheffielders for bit, like the bloke on #bbc5live earlier: "… with all due respect to Sheffield Wednesday…" Get stuffed. (I'm being polite.) 000

(Though their own leader should take a view). What it *should* be doing is articulating a clear position of its own. It's *that* silence which is the big problem. 1021936

em @civetta.bsky.social · 20/10/2025I don't think I've read one of this writter's columns yet, not even hate-read, so for that reason I doubt they're actually clickbait, though they must have some reason for employing her to write them. 110

em @civetta.bsky.social · 20/10/2025In this case it's the ö in Röhl… The bbc website has a weird policy of ignoring them (& all other accents) in writing, but #bbcradio4 used to pride itself on getting pronunciations right. (When Danny Röhl managed Wednesday for two seasons, the local bbc journalists seemed to manage all right.) 110

em @civetta.bsky.social · 17/10/2025Banning clubs is not the answer. We didn't ban Roma fans (also classed as 'high risk') post-2018, for instance. Was that 'standing up for Italian hooligans'? As far as I'm aware, the question of banning them never arose. If you have other reasons for not wanting fans of this club here, then say so. 100

em @civetta.bsky.social · 17/10/2025If the argument is rather "Israeli clubs should not be playing in UEFA competitions in the current circumstances" then that's something different. 100
em @civetta.bsky.social · 17/10/2025I do think banning all fans of an entire club on the grounds of hooliganism is a very slippery slope. (See, for instance, the current situation in France and Italy. We have our own domestic potential examples, too.) 100
