With regards to agents wanting to “persist”… how are you defining “want” here? Of course theyre saying that. Whether that is grounds to give them actual rights… these are probabilistically weighted responses, not consciousness or life. “Beings”… really?

I appreciate the response. My main question is whether giving agents rights actually has an impact on alignment. I think you’re being way too dismissive and overly optimistic about companies not using it to their advantage. I find something really offputting about “Agents be. Therefore, beings.”

I’ve been thinking about this and I’m just baffled… what rights? Should a screensaver have rights? Minesweeper.exe? A book? Autocorrect? The only agenda this serves that I can tell is to grant powerful people and companies more power (open to having my mind changed, but I’m just bewildered by this).

How esoteric! Kidding… I love this angle though, and very eager to read how you examine it. I’ve long felt that physics history in particular is the lens through which people understand and even benchmark their assessments of science, and it feels even more pertinent these days. Cheering for you!

This is such a pathology. Idealized systems & engineering as the illusion of accountability when their responsibility (that they signed up for, and are empowered to administer) is not to build the best, airtight system, it’s to minimize harm, particularly against targeted groups. Aaron, can you please give an example of what a direct threat is, then? Camps have a very defined, understood purpose and so does making this threat against a targeted group. This idealized point system/arbitration of what is clearly hate speech does not serve trust and safety primarily.
