NEW: ALA salutes Dr Carla Hayden for her exceptional service to the nation as the Librarian of Congress. We are deeply disappointed in Dr Hayden's abrupt & unjust dismissal last night, an insult to the scope & breadth of her work. Read ALA Pres. Cindy Hohl's statement: www.ala.org/news/2025/05...

NEW: ALA is going to court to stop the President’s attempts to illegally dismantle the Institute of Museum & Library Services. The President does not have the authority to destroy a federal agency. That's why we're taking action with our co-plaintiff @afscme.bsky.social. #ForOurLibraries (1/3)
We're suing Trump to save library funding. Show up for our libraries, American Library Association.

Today 21 states' Attorneys General filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the dismantling of the Institute of Museum & Library Services. ALA applauds this legal action by state officials who know how much these cuts would hurt their communities. Tell Congress to show up #ForOurLibraries: ala.org/showup
"ALA applauds the state attorneys general who are taking legal action to defend funding for libraries. Across the country, Americans rely on services supported by IMLS – the Trump Administration must follow the law and ensure these programs continue." ALA President Cindy Hohl. ALA is deeply concerned by reports that IMLS is sending notices to libraries claiming to cancel grants that are required by law. This harmful action will disrupt libraries' ability to serve their communities. Tell Congress to protect library funding: bit.ly/CallCongressForLibraries #ForOurLibraries

As a curator at a natural history museum, I'm gutted to learn about the dismantling of the Institute of Museum and Library Services. If anything, we need to fund, protect and preserve museum collections and uphold institutions of scientific and cultural knowledge now more than ever.

One of our few support systems, IMLS helped countless Natural History Museums modernize and care for collections and libraries. One of the most respectable government entities, IMLS is to be eliminated... really fucking stupid. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...
