Our new work @fmschu.bsky.social: Giant viruses are widespread environmental pathogens infecting diverse eukaryotes, but most GVs remain uncultured with hosts unknown. GVHoP provides hierarchy-aware host prediction and identifies potential host-determining factors. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

It might be an error in the system or someone's intentional decision. Whichever it is, it makes absolutely no sense to meddle with the name of our country in science, esp. when the host country is fine with that name.

One of the perks of coming from #Taiwan is you might get 3 different badges at a conference—a shocking original, an ad hoc version you make yourself, and one reissued by staff. In 20 yrs I might forget some talks but won't forget #ISME20 @isme-microbes.bsky.social promptly corrected an error.

How do predators and prey transform into hosts and symbionts? Using single-cell proteomics, we found cellular and metabolic remodeling, divergent outcomes of interactions, and a potential transporter critical for establishing a widespread symbiosis. #Eukaryote #Algae www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

This work in MBE @official-smbe.bsky.social shows that the ancestor of #giantviruses likely infected amoeboid cells in an era with significantly increased oxygen levels on Earth and later spread across different lineages of eukaryotes through host shifts within hundreds of millions of years.

Thrilled to share our new work in my first Bsky post. How old are viruses? We developed a host-calibrated dating method and inferred the evolutionary timescale of #giantviruses that have large genomes and infect various eukaryotes (animals, algae and many others). academic.oup.com/mbe/article/...

Abstract. Viruses are widespread parasites with important impacts on public health, economy, and ecosystems. However, little is known about their origins,

Scientists are now organizing events, called Stand Up for Science, on 7 March in Washington, D.C., and state capitals. So far, they have attracted more than 100 volunteers from some 30 states who are hoping to rally support for research as a public good. scim.ag/4328LAD
