We were living in Vienna when Russia invaded Ukraine, and you, my US friends and neighbors, sent thousands of dollars to fund direct aid for displaced people. That's who we can and should be in the world.
Vienna's Heldenplatz at night. A crowd of thousands stands in the plaza waving flags and signs, surrounded by neoclassical buildings. The blue and yellow stripes of the Ukrainian flag are projected on to the historic Burgtor (monumental gate).

I tagged along on a 4th grade conservation and agriculture field trip today, and it's just plain stupid how much we're going to lose by dismantling public science.

There’s been a lot of yelling about unplowed streets in Boulder of late, but this is why sidewalks should be the bigger story.

This is really interesting. Groundbreaking study on the value of libraries and “third places.” “A whopping 82% of people who used the library’s physical space and 79% of people who physically attended programs reported more optimism regarding the future, compared to only 58% of digital-only users.”

City councils often pay poverty wages, making public service difficult or impossible for many residents. Boulder Progressives was the primary organization supporting fair council pay in Boulder, which passed an increase for the first time since 1989.

My Planning Board colleagues nudged Boulder one step closer to eliminating family-based residential occupancy limits tonight, including recommending striking all references to cooperative housing from our municipal code. Co-ops have their own chapter there!

Let’s talk a bit about what you, an average German newspaper reader in 1933, would have learned about Hitler’s rise to power. Let’s assume you read the “Vossische Zeitung”, a comparatively liberal middle-class newspaper. In modern times, the Berlin State Library library let’s you read it online: 1/

Boulder might allow duplexes within 1 block of transit corridors, but 2 blocks might break things. 🫠

My job this election season required me to provide neutral service to all voters, and I did. But that doesn’t mean I wasn’t listening with my full heart. And now that the work is finished, I can still hear their voices…

Hiya, Bluesky. I run local progressive campaigns and am a new-ish member of the Planning Board in Boulder, CO. I'm here to learn from your takes on housing, land use, climate, and parenting, and maybe to re-learn how to share my own. It's been awhile!

Self-portrait of an election worker 11/7/24. Answering phones for the last month has felt like doing therapy for voters, and the stories I've heard - from so many fundamentally decent people - are a comfort as we move into a time of radical reliance on each other. Stay close and stay human, friends.
