POETRY FOUNDATION

The Mower
BY PHILIP LARKIN

The mower stalled, twice; kneeling, I found
A hedgehog jammed up against the blades,
Killed. It had been in the long grass.

I had seen it before, and even fed it, once.
Now I had mauled its unobtrusive world
Unmendably. Burial was no help:

Next morning I got up and it did not.
The first day after a death, the new absence
Is always the same; we should be careful

Of each other, we should be kind
While there is still time.

This year we’ve picked the theme ‘Weaving Words, Harnessing History’ for the poetry festival. While we’re excited to hear anything you’d like to submit, here’s a bit about the theme in case you’re curious! Stay tuned for more info #poetry #poetryfestival #yorkshire #bayeuxtapestry #stamfordbridge
‘Weaving Words, Harnessing History’:
This year we’ve chosen the theme ‘Weaving Words, Harnessing History’, taking inspiration from the arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry in the UK this year, and its association with Stamford Bridge in East Yorkshire. We’d love to hear your reflections on this theme, but we welcome you to write about anything that inspires you. The more poetry the better!

The High Wolds Poetry Festival is an annual poetry event which aims to encourage everyone to get involved with poetry whether you’re a dedicated poet or have never written a poem in your life. The festival is about making poetry available to everyone: we’re accessible, we’re local, and we’re proud of our rural roots.

Keith Douglas wrote this gorgeous poem 86 summers ago (in the midst of the Second World War). It still resonates hugely today...
Canoe

Well, I am thinking this may be my last
summer, but cannot lose even a part
of pleasure in the old-fashioned art
of idleness. I cannot stand aghast

at whatever doom hovers in the background
while grass and buildings and the somnolent river
who know they are allowed to last for ever
exchange between them the whole subdued sound

of this hot time. What sudden fearful fate
can deter my shade wandering next year
from a return? Whistle, and I will hear
and come another evening when this boat

travels with you alone towards Iffley:
as you lie looking up for thunder again,
this cool touch does not betoken rain;
it is my spirit that kisses your mouth lightly.
