It is easier to GIVE UP performance than to RECLAIM performance. “Don’t prematurely optimize” statements are nonsense. Proper guide: don’t give up performance prematurely. As such building engines / systems (as opposed to scripts or simple tools) in slow languages (C#, Python) is likely a mistake.
