It should be a wake up call that the last federal election saw Canadians at an all time financial wellbeing low. After all, politics is downstream of economics! Read my write-up here: chrispyross.substack.com/p/alberta-po...

(Alberta) Politics is Downstream of Economics
In many ways, politics is downstream of economics.

I think it is too easy to dismiss Albertan grievances. People will say, ‘oh so it's just an economic thing’. In some ways, yes. But I think it coincides with so much more. I get why it is hard for Ontarians to understand. Look at the change in their province’s finances.

Alberta’s Referendum, Online: Influencers, AI Content, Foreign Interest, and the Attention Economy Ahead of the October 19 Vote

Of the 114 we identify, 66 argue for an independent Alberta and 29 for Alberta to remain in Canada, with the rest taking no side. Pro-independence accounts receive about 80% of the engagement on relevant posts versus about 10% for remainers.

From that massive conversation, we identified the accounts receiving the most engagement (likes comments and shares). Just 114 political influencers capture 52% of the cumulative 18.4 million interactions about Alberta’s potential separation.

We searched for referendum-related keywords across X, Bluesky, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram. From January 2025 to August 2026, we identified 136,387 relevance-classified posts from 31,970 cross-platform accounts.

Our goal is to help the public better understand the constellation of voices championing each side of the referendum. The biggest innovation in this report - and there are many - is our approach to identifying the most influential voices online.

Alberta has a consequential referendum coming up in October. We hope to contribute to the public conversation by mapping the social media landscape before the vote. With no party or elected politician campaigning on separation, who are the voices driving the online conversation?

I'm so interested in how the left have galvanised around heat pumps, and the right have seen them as an unnecessary green policy. But then air conditioning is seen as a polar opposite culture war with the environmentalists fixated on emissions. It's the same technology!

In the era of affordability politics, making clean energy cheaper may be a more viable emissions mitigation strategy than making dirty energy more expensive. My latest over at The Climate Brink digs into the debate:

I like Max - it's really good to have the ability to talk to people with differently approaches. It's funny that Smith and Carney are panned by their respective bases for the MOU. From my pov, that's evidence of a good agreement. But obviously both sides don't trust the other. First steps matter

We used a frutiger aero design aesthetic to evoke the nostalgia from the late 2000s. Optimistic visions of a future that has technology in harmony with nature is in deep contrast to the future perceived by climate doomers.
