'It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story.' #BookWormSat This quote from a LIFE Magazine interview in May of 1956 is commonly misattributed to Agatha Christie, but she did not quip this herself – in fact, she thinks quite the opposite:
LIFE Magazine 14 May 1956
Christie fans so admire the settings of what has become known as the "classic" whodunit that they insist no other sort is any good. One of them has said, for example, "It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story." Agatha Christie herself does not share these views. She enjoys whodunits which are quite different from her own. She is a great partisan of Margery Allingham, Ellery Queen ("Very maddening, but quite nice") and Frances and Richard Lockridge's Mr. and Mrs. North. Among newcomers she rates Michael Gilbert, author of Smallbones Deceased, the best. She is also enthusiastic about science-fiction because of the wonderful new scope it offers in the realm of mysterious invention.
