Important work here! Psychiatrists in training know philosophical and conceptual issues affect their work but less than a third feel their training has been adequate in these areas.

12/ We advocate for the inclusion of, and a greater emphasis on conceptual and philosophical issues in psychiatric training curricula.

11/ ‘Conceptual Competence’ has been suggested as a framework for developing critical awareness of the conceptual assumptions underlying psychiatric practice. link.springer.com/article/10.100… cambridge.org/core/journals/ link.springer.com/article/10.100…

9/ LIMITATIONS -small sample size 153 -trainees interested in philosophy of psychiatry may have been more likely to complete the survey, potentially introducing response bias. -statements designed to index specific perspectives were not validated by qualitative interviews.

Chris Meechan @chrismeechan.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
8/ This undermines the trope that psychiatrists adopt an unreflective, narrow neuro-reductionist 'biomedical' view of psychiatric conditions, aitiology and treatment often levied by critical psychiatry

Chris Meechan @chrismeechan.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
7/ Trainees overall rejected philosophical statements that were designed to advocate for biological reductionism and purely naturalist definition of mental disorder.
100
Chris Meechan @chrismeechan.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
6/ Trainees overall endorsed philosophical statements that were designed to advocate for explanatory pluralism, nosological pragmatism/utility, the role of normativism and naturalism in the definition of mental disorder, and avoidance of diagnostic reification.

Chris Meechan @chrismeechan.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
5/ However, only 28% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that their training so far had adequately prepared them to address conceptual and philosophical challenges in psychiatry.

Chris Meechan @chrismeechan.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
4/ The majority agreed or strongly agreed these issues have important implications for research (82%) & clinical practice (92%), that developing competence in this area was important to them (91%) and should be part of psychiatric education and training (96%)
100
Chris Meechan @chrismeechan.bsky.social · 03/05/2026
3/ The majority of respondents reported slight (20.5%), somewhat (26.9%) or moderate (23.7%) prior familiarity with the subject matter, with 7.1% not familiar at all and 4.5% extremely familiar.

People who feel severely depressed for a long time
may simply need to be cared for, reassured with kindness and
hope, reminded of times when they have felt good, and kept
safe until they feel better, which they often do with time.
