In my good books for the day: People who publish their raw datapoints alongside the figures describing them. I first came across this as an eLife thing, and it takes a bit of time for authors to compile, but it can be super-useful for reproducibility. Could more journals encourage this?

Rapid modelling of the 2026 Andes virus outbreak predicts limited transmissibility and low mainland outbreak risk
In May 2026, an outbreak of Andes virus infection was reported among passengers and crew of the cruise ship MV Hondius. As of 27 May, 13 linked cases and three deaths have been reported, with ongoing ...

Looking at the effective 'success rates' for the BBSRC Early Independence Fellowships, round 1, by institution. These are not based on application content, but arise from the numbers of full submissions allowed by BBSRC in the triaging process just established. 17 institutions have 100% rates.

We have a new preprint out. The netMHCpan software package is widely used to study CD8+ T cell escape. Our new CD8scape package wraps around netMHCpan, facilitating analyses of T cell escape in viral populations. Work led by Ewan Smith @cvrinfo.bsky.social

What causes viral transmission bottlenecks? This study uses barcoded virions to show that in the case of #influenza A #virus, early within-host replication dynamics (rather than a reduced inoculum population) drive loss of diversity during transmission @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4ngicDK
Population diversity declines between inoculated and exposed guinea pigs. Viral titers in nasal lavage samples are indicated by the overall height of the bar. Red lines show LOD (50 PFU/mL). Colors within the bars represent unique barcodes, and the height of each color indicates barcode frequency within the sample. Plots for individual animals are paired with those of their cage mate. Representative pairs for direct contact (top half) and aerosol (bottom half) exposure are shown from three experimental replicates. Guinea pig ID numbers are shown in the upper right corner of each plot.

A useful thread for postdoc applicants. In Glasgow it is done by cover letter but if you don't provide evidence of fulfilling an essential criterion, we can't employ you. You have a *much* better chance if in your cover letter you link your achievements explicitly to the job requirements.

If an editor at a (respectable) journal can't after several weeks find anyone to review a submitted manuscript is there a point at which they should just send the manuscript back to the authors with profuse apologies? Does this ever happen? Asking for a friend.
