This position seems very similar to how we frame the Israelites of Jesus' time. We say that they missed Jesus as Messiah because they were expecting the conquering king instead of the suffering servant. Wolfe seems to want to focus on Jesus in Revelation and not the gospels.

As I think about this a little more: I suspect Wolfe knows well what the Bible says, and that it is at root a guilty conscience that causes him to react to Matthew's framing of the question. He knows it sounds bad, too, which is why he continues after Matthew is ready to end it. So very sad.

To be fair, the idea that Jesus was “punished” by God instead of us is specifically an evangelical / Calvinist teaching and not held by all Christianity. It’s called Penal Substitution and we can blame Calvin for it. Other branches of Christians don’t hold to it. The Orthodox say PSA is heresy.
