@mpjgregoire You're right. They could. And I'm being more polemical than I should be in saying that governments NEED to do this. The real way to remove the capital markets from social policy discussions is to self-finance and reduce the need to borrow, especially if you don't have a sovereign […]

@mpjgregoire yeah I think it’s harder being in the EU. But the fear is that a country WILL default which throws the euro into chaos. That was the problem with Greece in 2015 I think. I would have to check that. The observation about the markets is just that - an observation. There is no way for […]

@mpjgregoire this goes back to our discussion of wealth concentration. The financial markets are not subject to national policy decisions and can demand the terms of repayment on their investment without worrying about the social consequences of the decisions. a country has to take to get there […]

@mpjgregoire thanks for the article. That little paragraph about currency sovereignty is important. France can’t print more money unlike us or the USA or Britain. This makes euro-zone countries more like provinces than nations. It doesn’t have that option for debt liquidity. Regardless every […]

Dialogic containers and the danger of metaphors I'm writing about dialogic containers these days. They are tricky to describe, and in the same way that Mike asserts a sophisticated understanding of systems, it's important to find helpful metaphor for a dialogic container. As facilitators we are […]

@mpjgregoire No need to apologize. I think we keep sharing interesting perspectives on these issues. I see it as an ongoing conversation, not a repetitive one. And not one in which a victor needs to be declared.

@mpjgregoire yeah. We’ve chatted about this before eh? I appreciate The Economist because they don’t make stuff up. I agree about what they are saying. The question then becomes what do we do. The most prosperous countries in the most prosperous times in human history and somehow we can’t fund […]

So the question becomes, how much democracy is present here. How much SHOULD be present and is there a balance that is acceptable or is it irreconcilable to imagine that bond markets and democratic ideals can coexist for mutual benefit on the issues of social development?

From today’s Economist on the protests in France. Students and teachers unions protesting for earnest investments in education infrastructure will always take a second seat to what the bond markets want to do in a world where infrastructure funding relies on private capital.
So far, protesters have not been placated by the government's response to their demands. Edouard Geffray, the education minister, has promised an extra 3,000 supply teachers to help tackle understaffing. Unions say this is not enough. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Macron's centrist government has promised to discuss greater transparency over the way in which university applications are assessed. But the government has little room to spend more on buildings and repairs, another student complaint. It is already trying to bring down a budget deficit that will reach 5.4% of GDP this year, far above European Union rules, and is under pressure from the bond markets. That will not change, however much students protest.

I am way too online for my own good, and I had an unreasonably large twitter following, and I really *enjoyed* twitter for a lot of years, and yet leaving there and never looking back was maybe the easiest what-felt-like-a-big-ethical decision I've ever made.

@mpjgregoire it is now standard to run and get elected on the idea that 1. All deficits are bad 2. Corporate jobs cuts losses must be avoided at all costs. 3. Government job losses must be enacted as quickly as possible and will have no downstream effects. 4. Government waste always exists and […]

@mpjgregoire on the one hand, we are this week decrying 60,000+ job losses in Canada. On the other we have leaders like this PROMISING to add another 20,000 to that number. Why do we think that those 60,000 jobs were not also “wasteful” and products of bloated bureaucracy and corruption? The […]
