From today’s Economist on the protests in France. Students and teachers unions protesting for earnest investments in education infrastructure will always take a second seat to what the bond markets want to do in a world where infrastructure funding relies on private capital.
So far, protesters have not been placated by the government's response to their demands. Edouard Geffray, the education minister, has promised an extra 3,000 supply teachers to help tackle understaffing. Unions say this is not enough. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Macron's centrist government has promised to discuss greater transparency over the way in which university applications are assessed. But the government has little room to spend more on buildings and repairs, another student complaint. It is already trying to bring down a budget deficit that will reach 5.4% of GDP this year, far above European Union rules, and is under pressure from the bond markets. That will not change, however much students protest.

Excuse my language, but this is the stupidest fucking thing I've seen in a while.

The reason Canadian organizations like BC Hydro are showing Lake America is because Trump directed the Geographical Names Information Service to change the name. That changes it on all the base maps used by apps like Google Maps, which is used by organizations […] [Original post on cosocial.ca]

A triad of constraints for hosted containers This triad has turned out to be surprisingly helpful. I've been thinking about it ever since I posted it a few days ago, because it answers some questions that have been bothering me for a long time. So here's an […] [Original post on cosocial.ca]

Are the people trustworthy? Is the facilitator? Is the process? Back in April at the most recent Art of Hosting we convened, someone asked me "does the Art of Hosting make good faith assumptions about people?" I've been thinking about that question ever since […] [Original post on cosocial.ca]

This is Keystone, a cat which has many humans and homes in Deep Bay on Bowen Island, Canada. Keystone is the most affectionate and chill cat you have ever met. He will climb on you and snuggle you and give a dose of love. He also doesn’t mind dogs at all. #caturday

I find these trains comforting. Frequent trains between Nice and Monaco and pints east and west that stop every ten minutes or so here in Villefranche-sur-mer. It is one of the things about Europe that gives me hope and comfort that I don’t experience in North America.
A view from above of two trains in a station beside a Mediterranean bay wrapped by two headlands. It’s a sunny calm day.
