Where is the self-awareness in politicians of all stripes as they tear chunks out of one another on issues that will not merit footnotes in history except as causative explanations for our decline? The Mandelson non-story sucked up our bandwidth for more than a month, an astonishing spasm of self-harming self-indulgence. No wonder gilt yields are at levels that eclipse anything under Liz Truss. The infamous "moron premium" now applies to our entire political system.
