I’m seeing a lot of posts about talking to your sons in light of the Cornell article. And yes. Talk to your sons. Here are some things you should say, based on anti-violence research about what they need to hear:

One of the things that shocked me most in my study of campus sexual violence is that so many of the cases were just like this. The evidence was full of confessions. The perpetrators didn’t deny their violence. They just argued they should be allowed to do it and the school agreed.

Can we collectively agree not to contribute to or edit volumes for publishers who outsource their copyediting? Especially if an AI is involved?

One of our current solutions (and we’re not the only lab to be doing this) is to run a parallel in-person data collection with the ambition of having human ground-truth data against which we can train a classifier. With rapid advances in LLMs, I’m unsure how successful we’ll be in this arms race

Latest university guidance on phishing emails
A fictitious page from the real book Catch-22. Test says:

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that an email from a suspicious account was not to be opened because it might be a phishing attack. But phishing attacks were often sent from legitimate accounts that had been compromised, so an email from a legitimate account could not be opened either, because it might be a phishing attack. Faculty would be crazy to open emails from suspicious accounts and sane if they didn’t, but if they were sane, they would have to avoid suspicious emails. If they avoided them, they might miss a legitimate message; but if they opened them, they might be phished. And if they received an email from someone they knew, they couldn’t safely open that either, because their account might have been compromised.

Many sketch journals disappear and I certainly don’t trust them, but the big publishers, for all their greed, are in it for the long haul. I would prefer other models, but relying on donation-driven nonprofits isn’t a long-term solution either. I remember when OSF was the forever solution…

I get where you're coming from, but "proper" is doing a lot of work there. Repositories are of uncertain long-term stability relative to a publishing house which will work hard to keep all of its property in perpetuity. We are also asking non-profits to foot the bill for permanent repository storage

Amazon's own balance sheet presents the most compelling evidence that we are stuck in the Enshittocene, the era in which everything is turning into a pile of shit, because the worst ideas of the worst people now make the most money. 1/
Hieronymus Bosch's 'The Conjuror,' a painting depicting a medieval con artist playing a shell game for an audience of astonished peasant rubes. The image has been altered: the conman now has Jeff Bezos's grinning head, and the mouths of all the peasants have been replaced with inverted Amazon 'Smile' logos, so they are now frowning.

Send this to a young adult who looks at their phone while walking on campus.
A girl reading texts on her phone while walking through her college campus. All around her people are running because they are being attacked by squirrels. She doesn’t notice. Her friend is saying, reunion tonight! Bring snacks! O.m.g. Tiffany is freaking out for some reason. A squirrel shouts, “Fly, my brothers! To the dining hall!” The text reads: Oh no! You were on your phone and unprepared for the squirrel uprising! Put your phone away! Distracted walking sends people to the ER every year.
